Listen, I didn't say that I am going true architecture program so that everyone believes every single word I say. Wtf, is that what you thought? That's how it looks from a side.. I just ment that in my field I use that for that..
My message wasn't for discussions anyways. It was just my opinion, not a fact.
In fact, I still think it is a nice touch to the phone. Even though the main reason could be just a way to case a screen inside the phone.

To Dave, the boarder you see is actually a casement lip that the screen is pushed down onto, to seal and sit flush, i thought the same as you until i took a w880 to bits

No flash, and 2.2 or 2.4 screen could fit - screen is to small.

does anybody know what will be the exact difference between the w890 and the w898?
same as w880 and w888 (only 3G support)?
i was surprised to see in the spec that w888 also have less internal memory and weight 1 gram more than the w888:-)
can you tell what will be the price diff?

so Ervand, you're an architecture student. that's fascinating. however i'm talking about a thin strip of black around the screen of a mobile phone, and your academic endevours don't really have any relevance here now do they.
there's no way in hell that the black around the edge is for contrast purposes. at no point in a SE design meeting did someone say "hey, do you think people won't be able to tell the difference between colours because the screen is just too damn big? maybe we should put a black border around the edge so that people have a frame of reference for their eyes to distinguish colours"

totally hot fone. it's got the bigger screen display that the W880i is missing. and that 3.2mpx camera...What a step for the walkman class. im gonna buy it maybe 6months after its release..im gonna wait for the price to drop down a bit:)

The black border might be there just because.. ,but there might be a good reason for it. If you guys notice there are a lot of black frames for pictures, a lot of monitors come in main color black. I am an architecture student and when I take pictures to put them into my portfolio I use plain black background. Why? Because when you see something on a black background your eyes focus and concentrate on it better and don't tend to wonder around. Ofcouse frames come in all kinds of colors and some monitors are not black too, but any designer can tell you that black color is extremely effective especially if you present something like artwork.
I am not sure if that's the reason why they put this black frame on this model and some other phones, but it is certainly a good one.
And I don't think that black frame is taking over the screen size. Screen size is smaller because first of all because there is other stuff inside and they want to keep it slim (almost 10mm, WOW!) + my guess is in cybershot you would need a better and larger screen since you take pictures and look at them more since it is camera-oriented phone. This phone is for music and you don't need that much space. ALTHOUGH I DO AGREE THAT LARGER, HIGH QUALITY SCREENS MAKE PHONES LOOK BETTER AND MORE EXPENSIVE!

Its some kind of their art and beauty touch... At least that is what they thought... I don't mind that border either... Fits good to the phone anyway...

why do so many of SE's phones have that border around the screen? surely they could cram a couple extra mm's of display space instead of that big ol ugly black trim?
