    16:9 3840 x 2160 = 4K

    21:9 3840 x 1644 = 4K

    21: 9 5040 x 2160 = would be 5K

MASTERY, 25 Feb 2019For those of you who don't know how to compare resolution w... moreWrong.
          4K 16:9 is 3840 x 2160 pixels
          4K 21:9 is 3840 x 1644 pixels

4K means that there are horizontal approximately 4000 pixels (3840), while viewing the Smartphone on landscape mode.
So yes, while it is a 1644p Screen, the Xperia 1 indeed the worlds first 4K HDR OLED Smartphone.

For those of you who don't know how to compare resolution with aspect ratios (which I can see there are a lot of), allow me to clarify. 4K is 2160p, that's ingnoring aspect ratios. 4K on a display with a 4:3 aspect ratio is 2160x2880 (4/3 = 1.333… x 2160 = 2880).

            4K on 16:9 display: 2160x3840
            4K on 18:9 display: 2160x4320
            4K on 21:9 display: 2160x5040

Notice how increasing the aspect ratio (length) increases the amount of pixels, this is so when you're viewing a 16:9 4K image on a 21:9 4K display, it will use the same amount of pixels to generate the picture, thus there will be no loss in quality. Another important note is although increasing the aspect ratio increases the amount of pixels, the pixel density remains the same.

The Xperia 1 has a 21:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1644x3840 (21/9 = 2.333… x 1644 = 3836, which Sony rounded to 3840). This indicates that the Xperia 1 has a 1644p display, which is slightly higher than 1440p. Sure when you're watching media it may have an option to upscale to 2160p, but in reality, you'll be viewing it at 1644p.

            Therefore the Xperia 1 has a 1644p display not 2160p (4K).

AnonD-731363, 25 Feb 2019man you are on a wrong search. Mate 20 X was best phone i... morebuy one then. we don't care

Here is what I don't like: Honestly I am disappointed about the size of this device. I mean it is as big as your head, and if somebody is short and wear smaller clothes they can not comfortably put this in their pockets. Do not get me wrong, I respect Sony, I have used Xperia Sony, I respect Japan, but I can not agree with their vision this time. The phone looks too long, it looks weird.
The battery is a joke, come on, Samsung and others have much bigger batteries.
What I like is the triple camera system, I am sure it will rock! Sony has become strong when it comes to the camera. What I also like is their screen. The XZ3(which looks much much better), has even better display than the Note 9.
Overall it is a so-so device(at least for me). Everybody has its preferences you know.
Anyway, next time Sony please make a smaller version of your flagship, if you want more sales. Thank you, and keep up the good job!

Anonymous, 25 Feb 2019I don't know how did they say Xperia 1 has 4k display becau... moreAlthough I agree with your point of view, in reality at 21:9 UltraWide Cinema aspect ratio monitors and TVs, the official numbers for the respective resolution is as it follows:
                            UltraWide-HD > 2560x1080
                            UltraWide-UHD (2K) > 3440x1440
                            UltraWide-4K > 3840x1600
                            UltraWide-5K > 5120x2160
                            UltraWide-10K > 10240x4320
It probably has to do with the exact pixel count on each resolution thus despite the fact that 3840x1600 gives us less than 8mil pixels (6.31mil on Xperia 1) that 4k is supposed to be, the resolution of 5120x2160 gives us more than 11mil pixels which also is more than 4K. So a middle ground had to be made to define 4K in Cinema/Ultra Wide 21:9 panels.

Sony plan to release this phone in May. By that time people will already lose interest and I bet more new phones will be out in the market.

It's barely January 2019 and a lot of 2018 phones already look antique, especially for Sony.
Sony makes it look like they deliberately don't try to compete at all. Like they are given up hope and just gonna be a quality supplier for other brands showboating.
Why wouldn't they put their own 48Mp sensor inside their Qualcomm SD 855, otherwise?
                                      And measly 8MP selfie cam.

i don't know why ppl talk about iPhone here ??? u can get argue somewhere else here is a Sony phone and when u talk about performance already mi 9 on antutu surpassed iPhone xs and mate 20 so soc 855 is a great chipset however u can get it on cheaper models than sony or sammy, i am still using my z5p bec imo all those xz series are not worth it to buy seriously and pricing too.
but that phone looks promising even it has flaws
