So I figured something...considering the 888 has been having overheating issues, what if Sony added a co-processor to aid the 888 for the heating, better clocking and maybe even giving it enough power to pull off 4K@90Hz? Oppo was working on that so it wouldn't be a tough idea to pull off.

John, 14 Mar 2021Well, if you think 4k is a gimmick and want higher refresh ... moreI actually did. So here's my review:
+ HD resolution out of the box (the one I set on each flagship), but with sweet 120Hz
- the screen too small, surprising me a bit as i thought i would be fine with a smaller phone, but not anymore.. hard to read text
+ no gray lowlight backbleeding like on every Samsung/OnePlus
- absolutely slippery, ugly frame (when will this slippery madness end?)
+ light body
- unwanted keypresses and unlocks due to hard to find fp and too many buttons
+ the camera button was useful as it could trigger shot and had half press to control focus
- i couldn't swipe from the edge... i had the high quality foil reduced and reapplied, still not -> showstopper
+ totally unknown but fantastic SmartStay function that works in night, cool
- very abandoned OS, almost nothing there, shocks even a Oneplus user, also no desktop apps... no sync, no dex.. little software added value
+ SideSense is another take on Samsung function, and could be great if it was possible to trigger it (weird double tap on side)
- selfie pics were absolutely weird
+ physical fingerprint fast, again don't buy black color as it's hard to located
- no wireless charging is a huge huge minus, hard to swallow fact
+ massive codec support unlike Samsung riddance of AptX variants
- not a curved display... i just realized how useful it is
+ tinies status bar i ever seen, without the fogging notch
Unable to swipe, i could perhaps return the foil, but i returned the phone. Anyway, too small screen and no Qi isn't something to give up. Nice 1 day with the phone.

I'm a oneplus 7t pro owner thinking I might make the switch. The res. is only slightly better but who could say no to micro sd storage AND headphone jack? All on the latest chipset too lol. Also, with only the latest and greatest gorilla glass? Hell yeah, I'm in. Idk if my phone is considered true 4k though so meh.

TheGoldenMellifluous, 11 Mar 2021The main reason Xperia 1 II has to settle with 60Hz instead... morewell Sony or LG is not thriving to be exact:) but the high freq is an absolute must, it cannot be the only flagship with lausy eye hurting 60Hz. Re 4K i can't see extra pixels above 1080p even with quality magnifier, just like everyone else except placebo addicts. So I absolutely don't care about 4K gimmick, but I will not get an hearattack either if they announce just 90Hz. That'd be ok with me. Of course happy to lower the resolution, just like I do on each flagship.
I'm nerdy enough to have desire for classic features like sd card, notification light, jack etc. That's cool. But i'm not nerdy enough to want slow charging, hoping for some "extra battery life" (who cares?). I do charge slow, very slow, mostly, but the fast charging is a miracle for emegencies and when you simply forgot to charge or misplaced the phone on wireless charger.. Therefore, I do want higheeeer speed. Heard it's gonna be 35W? That's great!
Let's see... wish them good luck. X1ii was an interesting entry killed by scandalous 60Hz, let's see if they turnaround their ship this time

flagshipper, 11 Mar 2021dimensions are being reduced a bit -> cool
battery was ... moreThe main reason Xperia 1 II has to settle with 60Hz instead of 120Hz of its 5 II sibling has to do with its screen and the processor support. 1 II has a 4K Ultrawide screen (1644x3840) meanwhile 5 II has an FHD+ screen (1080x2520), and Qualcomm SD865 doesn't support 4K above 60Hz at all, despite 4K screen support and capabilities has been injected and stay since SD810 and Z5 Premium, 6 years ago.
And Sony targeted 1 II for Alpha 9-level photography-focused, multimedia-lovers and cinephiles, while 5 II for casual gamers and normal users. To countermeasure the omission of HRR in 1 II, Sony gave a 90-Hz MBR. And worse, SD888 doesn't even support 4K above 60Hz again, so Sony has to find a more effective way to make enable HRR on 1 III. And no, I don't think will sacrifice 4K for QHD+ HRR in 1 III, as 4K came along first before HRR did, few of traits of Xperia Z era elements to stay, and the Japanese company loves traditions as Japanese people did, so, yeah.
About the OS, Sony has been leaning towards Stock+, additionally with Sony proprietary apps since 2015, an approach that even OnePlus has abandoned since its newest OxygenOS that now leaning more to OneUI of Samsung (ironic). And for external software, at least with Sony's commitment to keeping its bootloader unlocked, that option widens a lot, from Sailfish OS, and more. Abandoned for you, but at least Sony still thriving. And about the battery, it's already much better in 1 II than the OG 1, and 1 III does indeed bringing more, above 4500 mAh+.

dimensions are being reduced a bit -> cool
battery was bad compared to X5ii -> need to fix
higher frequency -> need to fix
cameras in auto mode -> need to fix to compete with the market
2 available colors are extremelly boring -> bring more
those extra buttons are too easy to press, fingerprint reader hard to see -> need to fix
i consider X1ii price as a joke @60Hz and little "extra value".. it's a bland OS, nothing there, no external software either besider Upgrade tool.. looks very abandoned. shocks even an Oneplus user:)

I hope Sony was watching MKBHD video about their phones and announce the new Xperia mark III series at least in late April if not even in May. They're usually announcing new phones in late February and than they become available after a 3 long months (too) late in May... When the hype is dead. So, yeah... I really hope they will be releasing them much closer to day of announcement. That would help to sell more devices for this sleeping tech giant.

I had the Sony Xperia XP Premium and the video was fantastic for a phone. People who watched the videos on YT would actually ask what kind of camera was used. I bought a Red Hydrogen One after that, then the Samsung S20 ultra and am really looking forward to going back to Sony. For one thing, their phones seem to last with no planned obsolescence the way Samsung phones really do. The camera is awesome. The side mounted fingerprint reader is so fast and accurate you forget its even there.
The S20 is OK but the photos are digitally sharpened and most aren't nice enough looking to use because of that. Video is good though and the speaker phone is loud and practical.
Phone reviews rarely mention the mundane but important aspects of day to day use of these things, but the S20 is OK on that front unlike every previous Samsung I have had.
Of all the phones I have had though, the Sony has been the most enjoyable. I really hope the Xperia 1 Mark III comes out soon and lives up to its legacy. Will buy it right away.

I agree that storage is a huge issue, especially as we are able to take more data-rich pictures, video, and download video and music. I store a lot of music on my phone, and I don't see how 128gb without expansion is in any way a viable choice.

LOL, 07 Mar 2021Does it matter? Almost no one will buy it. Not helped by So... moreThe lag time between announcement and release is far too great to entice anyone but the most interested of buyers. I was just reading where OnePluse may do their announcement livestream on Amazon (UK at least) and people think it's likely that folks can order it RIGHT THEN, not 4-6 months later.... Too much happens in a quarter in the cell phone world for folks to wait patiently, and I am actually interested in this phone.

From certain Chinese and Japanese blogs, this phone may have a 3x 48MP rear camera setup. At the very least, the periscope lens cannot be only 12MP.
256Gb internal storage is a bit stingy for a supposed flagship phone in 2021, would have been acceptable two years ago, doesn't matter if there is a microSD slot. Then again, Sony for some reason likes to cut costs by reducing the internal storage, not the first time and so not a surprise.
