They said I could return it for a refund or repair it. The purple US region phone isn't being sold anymore so I asked for a repair.

Okay lets say you purchased from a store which doesn't support return and replacement policy. You should have taken it directly to SONY service center. SONY themselves offer 30day(or 15day depending on the region) replacement offer as long as you purchased from Authorized retailer.
You skipping on all those less complicated procedures was a bad move. Don't know why you did that. Hope they fix the issue.

Will this work on Wind Mobile in Canada? and which version is preferable for Canada - International or the US? especially in terms of over the air upgrades? Thank you.

Two weeks after sending in my 1-day old phone that bootloops while fast charging, I got a box from SBE repairs. It says the warranty is void due to "Unauthorized Repair / Modification" and they gave me back somebody else's phone with a trashed bootloader. The phone they sent back isn't even the right regional version.
Sony Support refuses to help and and SBE doesn't answer the phone. I'm giving them a week to fix this before starting a credit card chargeback.

I love this phone, the speed is insane, the screen absolutely beautiful and all the features missing in today's flagships it's there here!

Can't speak for the OP, but same story here. I live in the US, so have been waiting to get my hands on the XQBC62/B model, initially advertised on Amazon as available on August 25. My preorder did not come through at that date (they still don't have it in stock), and none of the other retailers mentioned on Sony's website seem to have any in stock yet.
The various international flavors (like the XQBC52, XQCBC72) are readily available though, but with limited or no 5G in the US.
BTW: Is anyone using this phone (XQBC62/B) with Google Fi? Does this phone support their network switching feature to automatically switch between T-Mobile and legacy Spring towers? (Or, do you get T-Mobile towers only?). I know it is not "Designed for Google Fi", but I'm also trying out a OnePlus Pro 9 which _does_ support this feature despite also not having that moniker.

That app had covered basic operation a lot better and more intuitive than Google Photos. But I guess everyone is into app recognizing faces, pets and locations these days. Sony didn't want to bother with smart tagging and they forefitted the app.

I'm giving back my Xperia 1 III, and this is why. The first 3 reasons were decisive; the other ones just unpleasant
- Although I've updated to the latest firmware since day 1, phone keeps getting warm even when using facebook or seeing some YT videos. Not to mention when using the camera...
- Screen is not bright enough. I noticed it during a quite cloudy day outdoors, I can't imagine in the very sunny summer days
- It has no face unlock. I know that it is not the safest unlocking method, but I would like to be able to choose... Having only fingerprint makes it hard to use with gloves.
- It supports no call recording via Google Phone, whereas my OnePlus with the same app does. This is not Sony's fault, obviously, but it is a feature that is important to me.
- Switching audio between earphones and loudspeakers is OK when using YouTube or Phone app, but is NOT possible for embedded videos in Linkedin or Facebook. This is only one of many small glitches in the software. Another one is the Google Photo gallery: when deleting one picture, can't delete the following one immediately
- Torch light intensity is really too low
On the other side, this is what I will miss (because I liked it a lot!)

- Camera button
- Form factor
- Camera (even in point & shoot)
- Front Speakers
- Aptic feedback

This is the fastest phone in 2021, or heck, the fastest phone ever. Seriously nothing beats the fluidity and speed of the Xperia 1 III.
