A very nice phone from Sony, Good for gaming, good for taking shots, ang Good as it gets as a waterproof phone. Downside? Cannot move apps to External SD Card (can be done with root permissions). Anyways, This one is still great!

I was wondering if Sony can introduce a new Xperia ZR Plus consisting of (1080p + 2MP Front camera atleast + 16 GB internal is a must) just same as Xperia ZL specifications and in the same size as ZL but it needs to have a removable battery with atleast 2600 mAh battery and icing on the cake would be if it copies the design of Xperia Z1 mini specially the glass finish. Guys I'll tell you with these specs Sony will boom but as of now compromising with ZR 8GB.

Hope that Sony acknowledges this comment.

Ok now straight to the review. A suggestion for potential buyers please read reviews from certified buyers or from those who actually owns this device rather than from someone who simply compares this phone without even owning it.

                        1 - Size.

The size of the phone is just perfect for your palm. You can have a very comfortable grip and can use it smoothly with one hand. Somehow I feel 5 inches are too big to operate easily with one hand or have a comfortable grip.

                        2 - Weight.

The phone is light and comfortable. If a heavy phone drops it is likely to get more damaged. Thus lighter phones are always preferable and ZR is light, sleek and stylish.

                        3 - Waterproof & dustproof.

The phone is waterproof and dust-proof. I haven't tested this myself but I have seen my friend doing it with his phone and the results were impressive. Honestly I don't want to swim or take a bath with a phone. I am happy as long as it doesn't get wet during light showers while taking a call; and this phone gives you that added protection. Don’t worry to answer a call while it is raining as long as you have all the cover flaps properly closed.

                        4 - Connectivity.

The phone features top notch connectivity. Call quality is crystal clear and no problem with reception. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi all works fine. It supports LTE but not much of an added advantage at least in India. I like using the tethering feature as you can use your phone as a hotspot. Your net is not working and you don’t have a data card nearby, no worries connect your laptop with this phone as a hotspot and access internet even without using a cable.

                        5 - Display & Screen Size

ZR gives you shatter proof and scratch-resistant glass, pretty impressive. Screen is perfect in size. Display is very nice with Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2. Guy’s come-on, you are getting 323 ppi crystal clear HD images, what more you need. 323 ppi is more than enough you will ever need in 4.55 inch screen. You can watch crystal clear HD videos. You will hardly feel any difference while watching a movie. It's just perfect in display according to its size. If you feel you need a bigger screen get a tablet, rather than a 5 inch phone. These 5 inch phones are not easy to hold and that's why probably Apple never manufactures big phones. Even though I don't have small hands I have seen people facing lot of difficulties to hold big phones especially if they have a small palm.

ZR sunlight contrast ratio is pretty good standing at 2.6 whereas Xperia Z stands at 2.4 and so does galaxy SIII. You will hardly face any problem reading stuffs even under direct sunlight.

Regarding viewing angle, honestly I never faced any problem. A phone is meant for private usage and not for all others to see. I feel if others can peep into what you are doing from all sides that a disadvantage rather than advantage; think over this before jumping to a conclusion. A phone shouldn't be confused with a TV, each has a specific purpose. A TV which doesn’t support good viewing is definitely a problem.

I even tried reading stuffs at 45 degree angle and viewing was not a problem at least for me.

                        6 - Battery Backup.

A smartphone must have a good battery backup. Good to see that Sony has worked on this. This phone does provide a great battery backup. With a full charge, without activating stamina mode I can read 30 - 40 mins news using the web, play real racing, age of warring empires for an hour, talk for an hour or more, send sms, check whats app, Line as required, surf the web for 20 - 30 mins, listen to music or radio for 15 - 20 mins and by the end of the day I still find I am left with 10 - 15% battery. I think this is pretty good.

I really like the fact that ZR has a removable battery which indeed is a great help especially if your phone gets hanged. Doing a hard reset is easy on a phone that has removable battery, trust me I know the pains if you have a non-user removable battery especially when your phone gets hanged.

                        7 - Organizer.

The phone provides excellent organizing facilities. Managing calendar taking down notes, sticky notes, voice recording, are butter smooth. The best thing I like is that you can organize things effectively without even feeling getting cluttered and can access that information quickly with just a few touches on the screen, very neat I must admit.
You can track your phone through Xperia in-built software if you have misplaced it. Navigation is pretty good; I really like the turn by turn voice navigation. I always prefer voice navigations in my earlier phones as well and Xperia ZR didn’t disappoint me at all. Car mode works like breeze and I feel that’s an important feature to have in a high end phone.
ZR supports a lot of social integration apps like Facebook, Google plus, Twitter, LinkedIn, Evernote and others. I never faced any issue while doing multiple browsing through these apps but Xperia SP do get hanged while using multiple social apps. I really like evernote as it manages all small reminders in an excellent fashion.
Web browsing is butter smooth. I never faced any problem while browsing through any website using chrome or opera. The phone is pretty responsive and you will find websites are getting loaded faster than on other similar devices.
Somehow I feel that the inbuilt memory could have been a little more as you can’t move apps to SD card in jelly bean. The phone does support SD card upto 32 GB so you will always have plenty of space for movies, videos, pictures, but not for many high end games because of ZR’s small internal storage capacity. Point to be noted it can support all high end games.

                        8 – Gallery.
The four apps Walkman, Album, movies, Sony Select improves the UI. Sounds is pretty good with good audio output but I still wish had the sound been a little louder from the earphones I could have safely by pass my iPod touch for some short trips. I haven’t tried ZR with good earphones but overall sound quality is pretty good, smooth and clean especially if you activate the feature clear audio+.
The radio works fine and I didn’t face any problem tuning to radio stations.
Camera is pretty good in daylight and moderate during night. There are some noises if you blow the picture to very large print sizes but negligible for day to day usage. If you plan to win a photography competition with this phone I suggest you to get a DSLR. Xperia ZR is meant for day to day usage and it’s pretty good by that standard. The camera takes some time to focus but gives reasonable good photos in daytime. You can improve this by installing camera focus related apps from the android market. Panorama mode works well and the pictures are decent. There are many other modes but normally you don’t need so many for day to day usages. Photo quality improves a lot if you use HDR mode and for those with shaky hands use image stabilization option. Led flash is good for short distance pictures during night. I wish Sony should also give us Xenon flash like Nokia.
Video quality is pretty good and I am not disappointed by the quality of ZR’s full HD videos.
The phone does support a lot of video and sound formats. I like the app X4 video player where you can watch simultaneously 4 videos. Xperia Lounge is also pretty handy giving you access to many pictures.
For those cribbing for 12MP camera, first read the manual before crying, you need to change the mode from superior mode to normal mode and then only you will get 13 MP camera. I really find this funny people start posting comments without even exploring the options.
Front camera is VGA and that is a bit of disappointment for me. For Skype videos you will not face any issue with video quality on a 3G connection. But when you use ZR on your home Wi-Fi network, I feel it would have been better if the front camera wasn’t VGA, but honestly all other features overcome this.

                        9 – Processor.
You are getting 1.5 GHz quad processor along with 2GB ram. Guys that’s superfast. I never faced any lags even while using multiple apps. 2GB ram makes sure you will always have enough RAM to work efficiently without any lags.
If I look at Benchmark Pi and Linpack ZR gives similar results like of Z and ZL. To sum things up Xperia ZR has plenty of raw processing power at its hands.
With 320 adreno you play high end games like real racing without any frame loss. You will notice the tyre marks on the roads something which you will only find if you play this game on high end mobiles. Sad to say you will notice frames are getting dropped even on Xperia SP which also has 320 adreno while playing Real Racing but not with ZR. Your ZR will support all high end games.
The best thing that I like about gaming with this device is that you can connect this devise with a joystick and can play smoothly without even touching the mobile. Please keep in mind that all mobile games cannot be played with joystick.

Touchscreen works perfectly and is highly responsive. I have never faced much heating problem as many users claim. Honestly every smartphone gets heated up little when you use it extensively and that’s acceptable for me. Your laptop also gets heated up if you use it extensively, I don’t see a reason to complain as ZR never heats up like a furnace. I have used Xperia SP earlier and I know SP gets heated up more than ZR does. I have also used Xperia Z and I didn’t find much of heating difference when I used this with my ZR.

Guys so what are you waiting for? Grab this phone quickly, you will not regret.

                            [deleted post]Hi,

Z has a non user removable battery and ZR has a removable battery, a big point for me especially when your phones get hanged and trust me all smartphones gets hanged at some point, even apple does as well.

ZR has better protection in terms of waterproof and dustproof.

ZR feels better at hand than Z.

                            Z cost 30 - 31K and ZR 27.5 - 29K.
rest you have read the complete review its you should decide. I have chosen ZR over Z primarily because of a removable battery and for a more comfortable grip.

                                        Awesome Phone from Sony!!!

I bought this phone yesterday..this phone is simply super!!
all features are excellent...its main advantage is-
                                        100% water proof.
                                        Amazing build quality.
                                        Nice camera..
                                        Ultra fast User Interface.
