Will never want another phone again.

This phone does everything and anything you would ever want a phone to do plus more. Very fast, durable, and user friendly. Uses Wii-Fi, and runs on the 3G Network. This phone is the real deal.

In order to use the G1 WiFI capability, do we have to buy a data plan for it?

I've owned the G1 for the past week and the first thing I wanted to see was just how long the battery would last by using it as 'just a phone' - i.e. wait in standby for a call, make a few calls, send a few texts, read a few gmails - i'm not a heavy user by any means.

So, I spent the first full charge in *2G network only* mode and the battery was still at 30% by the end of day 2, so it would've easily gone to 3 days using only the 2G networks. This also included downloading a browser and pacman (~500Kb in total) over the 2G network from the App Market. Internet speed was pretty good (UK T-mobile), certainly what I was used to with my previous handset (SE W850).

In 3G mode the internet access is extremely rapid and again, I made a few calls, surfed for 10 minutes or so, just normal use everyday light use. Already the battery is at 38% on day 1, less than 24 hours after a full charge. Ouch.

I haven't even begun to explore GPS, WiFi or Bluetooth, but I expect them to drain the battery in equally large amounts.

So if you just want to use the phone as a phone, set it to 2G, if you want to use 3G networks, GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth then expect a daily (or nightly) charge requirement.

Just my first impressions of using it:
It has a great touchscreen although my less-than-porky fingers usually press the wrong link when surfing on a webpage. Annoying.
The hardware keyboard, however, is brilliant. I don't like virtual keyboards one bit, they have no tactility (even with bzzzing haptics), but the layout and intuitiveness of G1 keys is perfect for me.

Build quality is good. My 3 y/o has played with the screen-slider mechanism and it passed with flying colours (i.e. it's not broke ;)

The nub ball thing is pretty much useless IMO, it's neither accurate nor fast to use which is disappointing when you're surfing around pages with lots of links to navigate.

Overall, it's a great *gadget*. If you want to use it just as a phone, then you can switch all the goodies off.

                                        HTH sitters-on-the-fence :)
