do you need a data plan for this phone? I only want to use wifi as I dont want to pay for a data plan. Also, will it work with Rogers in Canada (I only ask because even if it unlocked, the phone will still search for T-Mobiles network, so is there a way to turn this feature off as I don't want to pay for mobile internet anyways)

had it for a week, evry time i find it is missing something useful from a previous phone, the application pops up on android market. there are most probably better phones out there with better o/s or better screens or more apps, but i'm struggling to think of anything i would trade this in for.

peo, 16 Nov 2008It's all well and good having one to "mess around with" but... morei have used it in a real life situation as i got one through work and i find it easy to use, im also studying mechanics in college so im not just messing about with it in the office !

and as for the sliding mechanism ? its made from titanium so how could that be cheap !

I have found this phone to be pleasurable to use. It fulfilled all my desires that a piece of technology possibly could.

Anonymous, 17 Nov 2008What is the difference between US G1 and UK G1?There is no difference between the USA and UK G1 as far as hardware is concerned.

Software wise, there is nothing different either, other than the fact that I heard a USA G1 will have access to the USA Android Market and the UK G1 will have access to the UK Android Market.

I have a USA G1 using it here in the UK and I have no problems what so ever. The good thing is, when OTA updates are available, a USA G1 gets them first :D

UK recently got the RC8 update but I got the RC30 update about 5 days ago now.

There is no difference between the 2, just that RC30 is for the USA and the RC8 is for the UK.

BrOdA, 12 Nov 2008Is there any chance to switch on G1 without creating accoun... moreNo!

You must have a Gmail account else you will not be able to use the device!

In my opinion, Gmail is the best free webmail out there and I think everyone should have one. If you dont want one then just create one (very easy to do with the G1) and then you wont need to use it again.

After that, you can use the email client to set up your preffered email.

Anonymous, 12 Nov 2008looks good but do it have stylus for touchscreen? yup i kno... moreNope, no stylus as nothing but your skin will work. Not even your nails will work! Just your finger!

This is a good thing as it is very finger friendly and in most cases you only need to touch once and not 2 or 3 times as you do sometimes with resistive touch screens!

I am fairly confident that if you took it on the road for a few days instead of sitting in your office "messing with it" your opinion would change.

When i was sitting at home "messing with it" in the beginning i thought it was brilliant, I could even overcome the design flaws such as the chin making it slightly awkward to use the keyboard, and the clunky, slightly cheap feeling of the sliding mechanism, But once i got into the real world and started using it as a phone and business tool instead of as a toy, Then its Flaws became even more evident !!

I think it is what it is.... A TOY FOR TECH PEOPLE SITTING IN AN OFFICE MESSING ??

SirJames, 13 Nov 2008The G1 is awful. Compared to an ancient Nokia flip-phone I'... moreI almost fully agree with hat you have written, To be fair Android is great and i can see lots of potential as more developers become involved, But the phone itself was not given any thought, It is such a poor design.
It's ok all these people shouting back at how you should be using a laptop etc. But they really need to try using this phone in a real world situation, not sitting at home in thier bedrooms :-)
when driving this phone is a nightmare, No voice dialling means you have to use the touchscreen to dial a number, If it is in your contacts, then you need to open the keypad to type the name, or use the scroll function go to through your contacts list, then when you find the number the battery dies...
I bought an FM transmitter to use it in my car like an ipod, but quickly discover that after playing maybe one album the battery had been depleted severely, But you cannot plug in the headphones/transmitter at the same time as the charger :-(

As for those who say yes, but this is all sort with RC29, how long are you supposed to wait for this update ? It is rolled out as and when it gets to you, You cannot just download it which seems silly, Why not put a link on android market for the update ?

At the end of the day, FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT... and my first impressions of this phone were not good at all, T-Mobile should have spent more time looking at the design and performance of this handset before releasing it.

i work for t-mobile and i can easily say this handset is excellent !

they gave us a few to mess around with and i found it extremly easy to use, the touch screen was simple and anything i chose it was only one touch, unlike other phones were you press 5 times and nothing happens

the only thing that lets it down in my opinion is that you cannot record videos on it !

besides that its one of the best handsets on the market

Does anyone have any experience trying to use Excel (perhaps with more advanced functions in a spreadsheet) or Word documents on the phone? I don't refer to google docs.

this phone is great. only thing it needs is a 3.5mm headset adapter since the one it came with blewout on me the 2nd week i got it. other than that no complains here. and yes this phone shuts out the iphone 3g no problem. even the youtube app on the iphone is laggy.
