Tecno Pop 7 surfaces, will slot under the Pop 7 Pro

Peter, 14 March 2023

Tecno quietly released the Pop 7 Pro and the beginning of February, but there was no vanilla model at the time. That is coming soon as it just appeared on the Google Play Console. Well, actually this has been in the making for a while since it surfaced on Geekbench in October and the FCC certified it in December.

The GPC reveals that the phone has a 720 x 1,600px (20:9) display and while the size isn’t explicitly listed, it should be in the same ballpark as the 6.56” HD+ IPS LCD on the Pro model (the vanilla phone measures 164 x 74 x 8mm per the FCC, roughly the same dimensions as the Pro).

The Pop 7 is powered by the Unisoc SC9863A, a chipset that was previously used in the likes of the Tecno Pop 5 LTE from 2021. It’s not a powerful chip, but it is only tasked with running Android 12 Go Edition with HiOS 12 on top.

As usual RAM is a limiting factor, this model only has 2GB. The Pop 7 Pro has 3GB plus a Hlio A22, so it runs full Android 12. According to the FCC, the phone will have 64GB of built-in storage and will support basic 10W charging. Note that the chipset has an LTE modem, so no 5G connectivity here (to be fair, the Pro is 4G only as well).

We mentioned that the Tecno Pop 7 appeared on Geekbench and it did – it can easily be found by its model number, BF6. The score is not much to look at, but here it is. The benchmark confirms the basics: octa-core processor (four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.6GHz and four at 1.2GHz), PowerVR GE8322 GPU, 2GB of RAM and Android 12.

There is no indication of when Tecno will make the Pop 7 official, but considering the 7 Pro launch, we don’t expect much fanfare.
