The Garmin Forerunner 645 Music smartwatch can store up to 500 songs

Garmin watches are some of the best ones you can take on your daily run – but until now you had to bring your own music player. The Forerunner 645 Music changes that by providing offline storage for 500 songs.

You just need to pair it with some comfy Bluetooth earphones and you’re good to go. The watch will support contactless payments soon, so it shouldn’t be too jealous of smartwatches.

Admittedly on both counts it uses less popular services – iHeartRadio and Deezer, but no Spotify. And it’s Garmin Pay, which doesn’t have the penetration of competing services.

Where the Forerunner 645 beats smartwatches is battery life – up yo 7 days in “smartwatch” mode. You can pair it with your phone to receive and respond to texts and social media updates.

On a run, with the built-in GPS enabled and music playing, the watch can last 5 hours. During that time it will measure your training (and later, your recovery) with stats tracking anaerobic training, training load and more.

Of course, the watch can handle a lot more than running – it can track swimming, cycling (in and outdoor), paddle sports, strength training and more. You can compete in challenges from the online community if you need inspiration and encourage your friends if they need it.

And you can expand the watch’s functionality beyond exercises via the Connect IQ store. One app will tell you when your Uber is arriving, another lets you turn on SmartThings-compatible lights.

The Garmin Forerunner 645 Music will cost $450 when it becomes available in 5-8 weeks. Garmin offers a 50% discount on Skullcandy Method Wireless earbuds if you get this watch. And if you don’t care about the music, a vanilla 645 watch can be had for $400.

The point is that many people do not want to take their phone on a run or in races may not be allowed to. I do not know any phone that has anywhere near the number of sensors and information than most Garmin models let alone the more expensive ones. ...
