The latest Chrome 74 for Windows 10 has a secret dark mode

Ricky, 24 April 2019

Chrome is finally being updated to version 74 across all desktop platforms including Mac, Windows, and Linux. Along with Chrome 74, Windows users will be able to enable the long-awaited dark mode. This changes Chrome's UI, menus, and Downloads window to a more comfortable interface to use at night.

It isn't fully enabled just yet, but if you're on Windows 10, there's a way to force dark mode. It requires adding some text to the shortcut path, so you could totally have two shortcuts for Chrome: one for standard view and the other just for dark mode.

For this to work, you'll need to modify a shortcut file on your desktop. Here's what you need to do:

  • Right-click the Chrome shortcut
  • Add one space and "--force-dark-mode" (without quotes) to the end of the 'Target'.
  • Apply changes
  • Launch Chrome using the shortcut

Chrome 74 also brings the option to disable animations that might cause motion sickness for some users. It also changes a policy to block websites from opening new pages as you try to close them. Check out the Source link to see what else has changed.

If you had already enable dark on default app mode in Windows 10 (Under Settings > Personalization > Colors) , Chrome will automatically apply the dark mode theme itself. I love how Chrome integrate themselves into operating system. Would love ...

Thx man, I checked my chrome and say, holy cow I'm already using a theme :) but thanks a lot anyway. here is the Theme, that i use if anyone want to check it: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/slinky-elegant/bmanlajnpdncmhfkiccmbgeocgbncfln
