OnePlus Open debuts with top-notch camera, €1,799 price

OnePlus finally has a foldable - meet the OnePlus Open. It's a great first effort and it brings the shorter and wider book-style foldable design that makes operation far more comfortable. The Open based on Oppo's just-announced Find N3 but brings that phone's excellent hardware to more markets globally.

When closed, the OnePlus Open has a 6.31-inch 2484x1116px Super Fluid LTPO 3.0 AMOLED display with 10-120Hz dynamic refresh rate and a close to conventional 20:9 aspect ratio. The panel reaches 1,400 nit typical and 2,800 nit peak brightness.

Inside the OnePlus Open you get a 7.82" 2440x2268px Flexi-fluid LTPO 3.0 AMOLED display with 1-120Hz dynamic refresh rate, a 1.0758:1 aspect ratio, and the same outstanding peak brightness.

The OnePlus Open comes in Voyager Black with a faux leather finish on the back or Emerald Dusk (green) with a glass finish, but European buyers will only get the latter option, for reasons that are unclear. The black model is lighter at 239g, while the green one is 245g - both lighter than the 253g Galaxy Z Fold5. Oh, and the OnePlus Open has the classic alert slider.

The OnePlus Open really pushes the envelope on imaging. It has five cameras with Hasselblad tuning all around.

The main unit on the back is Sony's new 48MP LYTIA-T808 "pixel stacked" sensor. It measures 1/1.43" and has a 24mm f/1.7 optically-stabilized lens above. The so-called LYTIA T808 sensor features dual-layer transistor technology - essentially a redesigned pixel architecture that promises better light sensitivity.

The ultrawide camera has a 48MP 1/2" sensor with a 14mm f/2.2 lens and autofocus. Then there's the telephoto camera with a 64MP 1/2" sensor and 3x 70mm f/2.6 stabilized lens.

There are two selfie cameras - a 20MP unit on the inside and a 32MP one on the external display.

The OnePlus Open brings the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 packaged with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB storage. The foldable draws power from a 4,805mAh battery with 67W charging support. OnePlus says going from 1% to 100% takes 42 minutes and you should expect more than one day of use.

When you unfold the Open, you're greeted by OnePlus Canvas, which OnePlus says is designed from the ground up for multitasking. OnePlus says 95% of mainstream apps support the expanded display, and you can resize the active window in a multi-window setup to your liking. You can use up to three windows on the screen and any time - in both vertical and horizontal views.

The OnePlus Open is available in a single 16/512GB memory configuration for the price of €1,799 or £1,599. Pre-orders open today and will be live until October 26. Those who pre-order will get a free OnePlus Buds 2 Pro and there's a 10% discount for students. Open sales begin on October 27. Fresh OnePlus Open owners will also get 10% off the OnePlus Pad, and 30% off the Buds Pro 2, Nord Buds 2, and Buds 2R until November 30.

In India, the Open is INR 139,999 and it's up for pre-order now. It will be available in stores from October 27.
