Threads is finally available in Europe

Yordan, 15 December 2023

The Meta-owned social network Threads is finally available in Europe, and more specifically, the 27 member countries of the European Union.

The Twitter (now called X) rival arrived in the United Kingdom and the United States last summer, and reached 100 million registered users in its first week of existence.

It can be accessed on threads.net both by registered and unregistered users, while smartphone owners can also download the app for the full experience from Google Play and App Store.

Threads remain closely tied to Instagram, and you cannot post threads without an Instagram account. Both apps are heavily integrated with one another – a thread can effortlessly be shared as a story, a direct message, or even a post on Instagram. Going the other way around - from Instagram to Threads, is not as intuitive as we would've wanted, but it is possible.

However, a major issue with EU regulations remains. The Digital Markets Act was introduced to “level the playing field” and stop the abuse from Big Tech in preferencing its own platforms. Meta has to react until March 2024 to untie the complicated knot that is the link between Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and now – Threads.

The way Threads operates is similar to X – a user can post, repost, share with friends, send a DM, and, most importantly, combine a set of posts into a thread. Threads caught on quickly, profiting off the chaos at Twitter and its rebranding to X by its new owner and CEO Elon Musk, and the link with Instagram accounts also helped immensely.

Now, the question is, can the new social media keep up and serve those disgruntled Twitter users. We'll keep an eye on this one.

How does that prove that Elon Musk supports treating people differently based on race? That was what you were claiming. I'm not saying he's nice, I'm saying that from what I've seen, he seems to be quite clearly opposed to racism.
