Verizon begins offering unlimited data, well… kinda, not really

Verizon has announced a new feature for all its subscribers. For those moments when you might have to download a huge file, or binge watch a movie while waiting around at the Airport, there is now an option called “PopData”. This lets you use uncapped data for a specified amount of time up to 60 minutes.

To start a PopData session, all you have to do is sign into the My Verizon app and you can opt for either a 30 or 60-minute session where you can use as much data as you’d like without it counting against your data bucket. These sessions will cost either $2 for 30 minutes or $3 for 60 minutes and are not to work for tethering. Also, if Verizon deems that its network capacity isn’t up for it, you will be denied access to PopData. One last thing, make sure your area is covered with LTE, because if you slow down to 3G speeds, your session’s clock will keep turning.

Verizon has been beating around the bush with its recent ad campaigns advertising “limitless data” which means your data won’t be optimized like T-Mobile and Sprint do with some video streams, and PopData seems to pile onto that. Verizon isn’t going to budge toward unlimited data any time soon, but it looks like PopData widens the margins for a bit more wiggle room.

At that point, you still need to count your data like you’re counting calories. If you need to worry about spending too much data to have to purchase a separate free-data pass, you’d better love your carrier.
