Weekly poll: did your phone get Android 7.0 Nougat?
It’s a never-ending rat race this, keeping your phone’s software up to date. Phone manufacturers have become more responsible about providing security updates, but they can still be uncooperative when it comes to bringing you the latest and greatest from Android.
iOS users have it easy - Apple supports its gadgets for years, even after they have outlived their useful lives. Then again towards the end they slow down to a crawl so it’s not all perfect.
Google unveiled Android 7.0 Nougat in late August 2016 and the first phone to actually launch with it was the LG V20 in October. Nexus phones got updated a bit early, but there were some benefits to starting with Nougat (e.g. the seamless update process requires special partitioning of the storage, not possible with an update).
Getting a Nexus is usually your best bet to get updates early... or to get them at all. Still, this doesn’t last forever, the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 (both launched October 2014) will not be updated past version 7.1.1.
What about your phone? Some of you have had Nougat for a while and it feels like old news while others are still waiting for the notification. Unfortunately, many of you will not get official Nougat on your current phones and some of you have taken things into their own hands. Which as gotten tricky as Lineage OS is still busy rising from the ashes of CyanogenMod.
Well, let’s have show of hands - who’s got Nougat and who doesn’t?
