Weekly poll: Is €930 a fair price for the Galaxy S8?

The Samsung Galaxy S8 was always expected to be pricey, but the latest rumor pushed the expected price even higher - €830 for the S8 and €930 for the Galaxy S8+. Is that a fair price?

The Galaxy S8 duo will have exclusivity on the Snapdragon 835 chipset at launch, the major competition stuck with S821 or has its own chips (e.g. Kirin 960). Plus, a new generation of Super AMOLED is bound to bring improvements.

Not to mention it will be the only one on the screen to combine minimalist bezels with curved edges (the LG G6 screen is flat). Then there are rumored enhancements to the camera, security (facial recognition) and more.

However, Samsung missed out on some upgrades. Notably, the Galaxy S8 will be one of the few 2017 flagships with a single main camera.

Then again, Apple and Google don’t sell theirs much cheaper. Sure, the base iPhone 7 and Pixel start at €760, but both are smaller than the 5.8” Galaxy S8. The bigger versions - iPhone 7 Plus and Pixel XL - start at €900, essentially on par with the expected price of the Samsung.

You still have to consider storage - 32GB non-expandable memory doesn’t cut it, going up to 128GB will set you back another €110.

And for all this talk, you just know that the next Xiaomi Mi, OnePlus, ZTE Axon and similar will offer the Snapdragon 835 at half the price. They will come out several months later than the S8, but you might be willing to wait a few months to save a few hundred euro.
