Weekly poll results: Pixel 4 XL somewhat makes up for the lackluster Pixel 4

People aren’t happy about the old image sensor. They are not happy that there’s no ultrawide camera. The limited storage is an issue. But what people dislike the most about the Pixel 4 is the small battery.

The little Google phone got hammered in last week’s poll, getting only 11% of the vote. It even lost out to older Pixels – by a single percentage point, but still.

The Pixel 4 XL seems to have fared better, okay even. It got 27% of the vote and while that’s still well short of the “Google missed the mark” option (which got 50% of the vote), it’s pretty clear which of the two Pixels will sell better.

Compared to the Pixel 4, the XL has a larger, sharper screen (6.3” and 537ppi vs. 5.7” 444ppi), a larger battery (3,700mAh vs. 2,800mAh) and... an “XL” in the name. Really, those are the only differences.

The many issues that cropped up since launch (which was last week) are equally true about both phones, including lack of 4K @ 60fps video recording, iffy face unlock security and a 90Hz screen that runs at 90Hz only some of the time. Plus all the things we mentioned in the first paragraph.

Between the Pixels, Nest smart home devices, Chrome books and casts and the Stadia controller, Google seems to be serious about breaking into the hardware business. But it’s not doing a very good job at it.

Sadly, each year Google launches a phone with great software, but poor hardware, making the purchase decision difficult. Last year I bought a pixel 2XL when the 3 was released and was very happy with it, but I like a smaller phone. This year I bought...
