WhatsApp HD video support is now rolling out

Great news! WhatsApp is finally adding support for HD videos! No need to double check the date on this article, you haven't accidentally been time-machined back to 2005. It's still 2023, and one of the world's leading messaging services is only now getting round to adding a feature like this.

Last week WhatsApp added the also incredibly long overdue support for high resolution pictures, and at that time it promised it would do the same for videos at some later point.

Well, that's today. The rollout has started, but of course it's a staged one, so it might take a while before you see HD video support on your account. Don't worry, both iOS and Android devices are getting it.

With this feature, you will (optionally) be able to share 720p videos, up from 480p which used to be the only choice. To use it, select the video or videos you want to share, tap the new HD button on the top of the screen, and then confirm whether you want to share in Standard Quality or HD Quality (aka 480p or 720p) in the dialog that appears. This will also show you the associated file sizes, to help you decide.

As with HD images, and all images, and all videos, the HD videos shared on WhatsApp are protected with end-to-end encryption. The recipient of an HD video will see an HD badge on it.
