Windows Mobile is dead, long live Windows Phone 6 Starter Edition

17 February, 2010

If you thought Windows Mobile 6 was finally put to rest, guess again. It turns out there's a little something called Windows Phone 6 Starter Edition, which is headed to new and emerging markets and can be used for rugged field computing and so on.

The Windows Phone 6 Starter Edition supports just about every kind of mobile phone connectivity used today - 2G GSM, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA2000, EV-DO Rev A and TD-SCDMA (the Chinese home-brewed 3G). It will be available in two versions - with and without Office Mobile.

But here's the kicker - the Windows Phone 6 Starter Edition, despite the "Phone" in its name has nothing to do with Windows Phone 7. It's just a rebranded Windows Mobile 6.5. Well, we guess you can't make a device like the Motorola MC55 and put social networking on it.
