andyl, 06 Jul 2019I have this phone. Coming previously from Nexus 5 and Nexus... moreSo, with regards to the 8 hours of SoT, do you keep the brightness on Auto brightness, and at what percentage?
Also, is the automatic sync always on? I mean, for notifications, emails, instant messages..
Thanks for the comprehensive review and the useful pieces of advice.

I have this phone. Coming previously from Nexus 5 and Nexus 6P, I have to say this is the best phone I've ever used. And much cheaper too - it is only selling for 200 euros around where I live.

There are a few bad things about the camera, all of which can technically be solved through software, and currently can be partially remedied by downloading a GCAM port (i.e. a port of the Google camera app specifically for the Mi 9 SE, done by kind developers and can be found through Google).
--- First, the STOCK camera app will over-process the skin of faces when it detects them. It loses a lot of detail in trying to smooth and whiten the skin with no option to turn it completely off.
--- Second, as mentioned in the review, there's only 1080p in 30fps in the STOCK camera app.
--- Third, Night Mode in the STOCK camera app is simply poor.
Thankfully, I have been able to avoid ALL these problems by using a GCAM port, which includes Google's fantastic Night Sight, zero-processing even when shooting faces, and having the option to record 60 fps in 1080p. Do note that Pixel 3's camera is still better though, although not by much and you sacrifice the useful wide-angle lens (Hi, Pixel 4).

In terms of battery life, I have no complaints at all. With a 1080p AMOLED screen, Dark Mode enabled, and a 10 nm SOC, I get 8 hours Screen-on time and 54 hours Screen-off time on Accu battery app. Coming from a dying Nexus 6P which only has less than 3 hours Screen-on time, I am happy I don't have to worry about getting through a whole day. Although getting to 7 nm (Hi, Mi 10 SE) would surely make things even better. Fast charging is super useful and I can top up from 40% back to 80% in just 30 minutes. And although I am guessing here, having 18 W charging and not something higher should help the battery healthier (keep its charge better) in the coming years.

Performance-wise, I don't game so I can't comment much other than to say I am more than satisfied with the SD 712 chipset. I especially appreciate the 6 GB of RAM and the UFS 2.1 storage performance, both of which, in fact, has a greater impact on real-life usage performance.

Display quality is nothing less than stellar, both in terms of color and brightness. However, I do miss the 1440 x 2560 resolution of my Nexus 6P (i.e. QHD, although I must accept it at this price point). I add that the notch is small enough to go unnoticeable, and the system update which smoothed the notch curvature really made a big jump in the aesthetics of the screen.

Lack of 3.5 mm jack is no problem with the included USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter. Although the speaker is pretty loud and nice, a stereo one would be make video watching experiences much more immersive and pleasant (something which the Nexus 6P spoiled me with). People should be aware that audio recording is much clearer and crisper than the Mi 9 (not sure about the Mi 9T and whether it is a software-related issue), and should be great for recording class lectures, though I have already left school and would be unable to test it in that scenario.

That in display or under display fingerprint is legit, and allows me to unlock my phone with it on my desk. It is faster than my Nexus 6P although you have to look to ensure you place your finger at the correct location, something that is made easier by its showing of an elegant icon at the sensor location when you lift up the phone. (I am practicing to achieve the no-look unlock which was easy previously with the fingerprint reader on the back.)

MIUI has actually been more pleasing to use than Stock Android for me. The full screen gestures are mostly useful and allows you to gain more screen estate. And the swipe down on home screen to see notifications, swipe up on home screen to search on Google Now, and the built-in Lock Screen widget (long press on home screen to find widgets) will all be sorely missed if I went back to Stock Android. The fingerprint unlock animation is sexy and well-done (I'm on the 'Pulse' animation now).

Last but not least, the most appealing aspect of the phone is its size. Even though it is 5.97 inches, it is actually a relatively small phone like S10e or the small Pixel 3/Pixel 3a because of the lack of bezels. It is 80% of the size of my previous Nexus 6P which has a 5.7 inch screen. Do not forget the weight and thickness of a phone when you are considering a new purchase, as it really makes a big difference given this is a device that you will bring with you all the time and hold for long durations.

The headliner is that this is a 4.5/5 phone with only downsides of mono speaker and bad stock camera app, the latter of which can be solved mostly by downloading a GCAM port, the former of which you just have to live with.

          Thank you for reading!

Best phone for 250euros on the market today. Compact size, great cameras, great looks, great performance. If you are smart, u will go for this one, if you are not, u will be comparing this phone with phones that are 300 euros more expensive. This one does not even have rival. Compact beast.
