Though there's MIUI installed, I don't use it. I don't even have a Mi account associated. What I use is Xiaomi hardware, Google's Android OS & Google's Play Store. Even my Sleipnir browser, which is extremely customizable doesn't use Google's Chromium/Blink engine, but WebKit engine from Apple.
I rely on 3rd party apps...
...for even the basics starting from Dialer, SMS messaging, call logs, calculator, alarms, keyboard, camera, gallery, backup, text editor, battery management, file manager, audio player, maps, app manager, media editor, launcher, documents, etc.
I don't use one anti virus, because all my apps are scanned periodically by multiple anti virus engines. All my apps are behind firewall, therefore I control which apps connect to internet and which are restricted. My background app/services are also being observed and maintained by another exclusive app, so as to preserve performance and battery efficiency at the same time. This all on a non rooted, stock firmware device.

"Yes, Xiaomi needs time to push Oreo update with MIUI skin."
"Some users face compatibility issues here, between the old and new updates."
__________
Coming to me, I am against updates. I never updated my device, not even once. I believe when we cannot update our hardware (without buying new one), why update software. What I do is simple, I tweak the settings, install a custom launcher and around 80 other apps which substitute the default stock apps. Because MIUI restricts on uninstalling or disabling stock apps, I hide them in my launcher and forget them.

Seriously, you have your experience with Xiaomi phones and I have mine.
From experience I can say that Xiaomi are among the slowest when it comes to updates(Huawei with it's EMUI is usually months ahead) and many times Xiaomi phones need 3-5 aditional updates (about 6 monthy of customer frustrations) until the user gets something decent.
-If you're into custom ROM then Xiaomi is a good choice at a good price.
-If you are a normal user and don't care about custom firmwares then Xiaomi might not be the best choice.
