it is not because of developer mode. it was a fix pushed by mi to every max user. sometimes you may get additional update (which will be not rolled out to everyone) it is called beta update for global stable rom. they just push these update to some random user to check the stability of the update then it is released for everybody.

If you had recently purchased the Xiaomi Mi Max, that launched in India last month, but have been experiencing Wi-Fi connectivity problems, you’ll be relieved to learn that the issue has been addressed by the company.
While the earlier units sold did not seem to have any problems, Indian consumers who purchased the Mi Max in the first week of August began complaining of their smartphone being unable to connect to Wi-Fi. Trying various options, such as performing a factory reset, resetting the Wi-Fi, restarting the router, updating the software, and changing the bands, all failed to resolve the problem.
After receiving a number of complaints, Xiaomi’s engineers have identified the cause of the problem, and the company has just released an OTA update to resolve the Wi-Fi connectivity problems faced by Mi Max users in India.
Xiaomi has listed four methods in which Mi Max users can install the OTA update and fix their device’s Wi-Fi connectivity issues –
Method 1: Update from the Updater app (Recommended solution using mobile data, just 1.3 MB)
Go to Tools folder
Select Updater app
Press on “Check for updates”
Download the update and reboot the device
Method 2: Update your device via OTA zip
Download the OTA ZIP here
Connect your device to Windows PC
Copy the downloaded OTA zip file
Paste it to root directory of your device’s internal storage
Unplug the device from the PC
Open Tools folder from homescreen and select Updater app
Click on the menu button on top right, the “three dots button”
Click “Choose Update package”
Browse to the OTA ZIP which you copied to your internal storage
It will then ask to reboot to Flash Update the ROM
Method 3: Update via Recovery or Fastboot (Only for advanced users)

How to unlock your Mi Max
Keep in mind that if you own a Mi Max that does not have any Wi-Fi connectivity problems, then you do not need to download and install this update.
If you’re among the Mi Max users who need some help with the instructions above, you can visit the company’s nearest Mi Exclusive Service center as the fix has been made officially available to all its centers. You can locate the nearest Xiaomi service center by searching from this link.
You can also call the company’s customer care number in India at 1800 103 6286 and follow the instructions given by their agents to resolve the Wi-Fi connectivity issues in your Mi Max.

I did many things....nothing was successful. Stumbled upon this advise on the net.
Step 1: enable your phone as developer.To do this, simple tap MIUI version text for 5 or more times. The you will get a message saying, you are now developer.
Step 2 : Go through Tools through UPDATER App to receive the 1.3 MB update for 7.5.7.0
Step 3 : Install the update which will solve the problem.
Please note, insert a working sim card and with mobile data, you can download this update only through mobile data.

I also purchased the MI Max and faced the same poblem very upseted but solved my problem today morning unfortunately i updated my phone and then it was connecting to wifi. awesome phone and guys please go to updater and update by mobiledata and then connect to wifi it will connect no worries about wifi problem i think problem solved.

In sri lanka Im using this phone since 6th of August. Nothing wrong with wi-fi. I donwloaded all apps via wi-fi. Hahaha Indians are always blaming and whining as usual. Trust me it's a great phone. Best phone in 2016 so far.

If it is MIUI Global 7.5 | Stable 7.5.4.1 (MBCMIDE) then, it will work.
If it is ..Stable 7.5.4.0 --- like in my phone with Original shipped version (on Aug8). Then Wifi will not work.
If it is MIUI Global 7.5 | Stable 7.5.4.1 (MBCMIDE) then, Wifi will work.
Then how I received 7.5.4.1 ?
I did many things....nothing was successful. I think I enabled my phone as developer.

Within an hour, I received 1.3 MB update, through OTA, through UPDATER App. which solved the problem.

Yesterday I have bought this mobile in showroom directly. In Online it was not available. Out of stock. After purchasing this mobile immediately i can connect wifi without any issue. Even I have received MIUI V7.5.0 Update through wifi only. I don't have net pack using in wifi only.... No Issue.

I just now received OTA update 7.5.7.0.
After installing it the wifi problem has
been solved. The Mi drop is also working
No problem at all.

I just got a 1.3mb update. It's maybe for wifi issues though I wasnt facing issue on connecting wifi. It was fine for my device.
