As per their instructions I downloaded the unlock utility, but it failed to identify the device, reporting instead that the device is already unlocked, and that repeating the unlock procedure is unnecessary. Nonetheless, the updater continues to fail to recognize "update.zip" in the "downloaded_rom" directory as an update file.
Still stuck with no ability to upgrade, either OTA or any other way, or to use Android Pay at all. Any further help would be appreciated.

So, I'm still stuck with no known way to update ROM.

Totally stuck. No way to update, or to get Android Pay to work in USA. Too bad such great hardware is made useless by crappy software.

So if I have all the contents in the "downloaded_rom" directory as instructed, what then?

Anonymous, 03 May 2017My unit has finally arrived. I bought the 18k Model, 256GB ... moreYou can download and install the official global ROM for your device from the miui forum here. There are two methods, recovery and fast boot, either must work.
Fastboot method from xiaomi is very easy because they have a flashing application, you don't have to know all those commands to flash your phone. However you will need to backup before any of the methods as you are coming from a non verified ROM.

Really an amazing phone. I bought the Ultimate version which comes with a nice leather case.
Good points:
- Wonderful design and the ceramic is just amazing. Most beautiful phone I've ever seen.
- Powerful (6GB RAM) and very easy to use. I had it with multi language and google play store. I saw nothing in Chinese.
- 6.4 inches screen but still reasonable phone size
- 4G works fine in Belgium
- Battery life is excellent (Coudn't test the 3.0 quick charge yet)
- Fingerprint scanner is very good
- Good and unique sound created by the ceramic while calling
- Very high quality phone and material for that price (I had for 600€, all included)
Bad points:
- Camera is quite poor. Camera of my Galaxy S6 works much better.
- Screen and resolution are good but not as great as Amoled screen can be
I'm a very huge fan of this phone which I will use as my everyday phone. But I will keep my S6 when I know I will need a camera.

Both 3G and 4G connectivity works simultaneously. With the huge memory capacity, coupled with the second space feature, it is so practical for me to just carry one phone instead of two phones previously. Only problem which I am facing now is that the Android Pay does not work on this phone. My phone was come with Global ROM (but according to official Xiaomi site, there isn't any Global ROM for this phone). I am not sure if the Bootloader was unlocked and cause the Android Pay refused to work. I am going to check it out later tonight!
