Xiaomi Redmi 5 review
A decent 18:9 LCD
Xiaomi is clearly keeping up with display size and aspect trends. Despite its price tag, the Redmi 5 comes packing a tall 5.7-inch screen and one of pretty decent quality too. There's a welcome increase in real-estate compared to previous generations.
The Redmi 5 effectively has what is a 5.5-inch screen with a bit of extra screen on the top and bottom, which makes it look taller and increases the diagonal to 5.7 inches.
Resolution, on the other hand, is set 720p. Well, it's HD+, with some extra pixels top and bottom as we already explained. The whole thing works out to 282ppi - not ideal, but still perfectly usable.

The Redmi 5's display is pleasantly bright, topping out at around 500 nits. That's certainly not spectacular for an LCD but it's quite alright. This applies to the default adaptive display mode in which the system will subtly change colors and contrast according to the amount of ambient light. Switching over to the fixed Standard contrast mode lowers the brightness down to 460 nits max.

If it's a color-accurate display that you are after, you will be better off on Standard contrast mode. Enabling it brings down the average and maximum DeltaE value from 5.7 and 10.3 to 3.2 and 6.7, respectively. That quite good accuracy - especially for the class.
Using the standard preset will also disable the color correction. It's by no means a major loss since the Warm mode only barely shifts the gamma correction away from the blues, still keeping the noticeable bluish tint that most modern smartphones have.
Battery Life
The Redmi 5 is thinner that the bigger Redmi 5 Plus and even more so than the older generation Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4. Naturally, a slimmer profile means a smaller battery, a 3,300mAh unit in this case.
While this is undoubtedly a significant downgrade from the 4,000mAh of the older generation, Xiaomi has a way of making up for it. It's rather Qualcomm that has one on offer, namely the Snapdragon 450, a budget chipset built on a 14nm fabrication process, making possible a rather power efficient operation of the system.
This explains the respectable 83 hours of an overall endurance rating the Redmi 5 scored in our tests. Besides the obviously frugal cellular modem, the web and video playback scores complement the new LCD's power efficiency, as well as the software optimization of MIUI 9 and its default apps.
Our endurance rating denotes how long a single battery charge will last you if you use the Redmi 5 for an hour each of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. We've established this usage pattern so our battery results are comparable across devices in the most common day-to-day tasks. The battery testing procedure is described in detail in case you're interested in the nitty-gritties. You can also check out our complete battery test table, where you can see how all of the smartphones we've tested will compare under your own typical use.
Audio is poor with external amplifier, decent with headphones
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 shared the poor performance of its Plus sibling when working with an active external amplifier. Nearly all of its readings were poor and even if the volume was nicely high, it couldn't quite make up for that.
The performance rapidly improved when our standard headphones was plugged in. Volume remained high, but frequency response was excellent in that case and there was no distortion whatsoever. The stereo crosstalk was a bit higher than average, but overall the clarity was very decent and with the loudness so impressive it's a great showing by the entry level handset.

Loudspeaker
The Redmi 5 has a single, bottom-firing speaker at its disposal. It's behind the right-hand grille, in case you are wondering.
While not as powerful as its bigger sibling, the Redmi 5 still pumps out plenty of volume so it's a solid ringer.
Speakerphone test | Voice, dB | Ringing | Overall score
63.1 | 67.3 | 71.3 | Average | |
64.8 | 70.1 | 72.0 | Average | |
67.7 | 75.6 | 64.8 | Good | |

71.1 | 72.7 | 87.7 | Excellent
74.0 | 73.9 | 90.4 | Excellent |
Speaking of ringtones, the speaker on the Redmi 5 is particularly loud when you feed it high-pitched sounds. If you put on the proper chime, you can count on ear-piercing incoming call notifications.

Well that's definitely not the case with me. Mine works just fine irrespective of where I keep it or hold it. It's an amazing phone in this price.
