Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 visits Geekbench with Snapdragon 617

Peter, 09 October 2017

Xiaomi has always offered great bang for the buck, so it's exciting to see hints of the Redmi Note 5, which combines two current flagship trends – 18:9 bezel-less screen and dual cameras. Better yet, rumors hint at a Snapdragon 660 chipset – a “lite” version of the flagship 835 SoC.

A Geekbench 4 result potentially sours the inflow of rumors – it lists a Qualcomm MSM8952 chipset, aka Snapdragon 617. Well, eight Cortex-A53 cores at a low clock speed are no match for eight Kryo cores. Not to mention the aging GPU...

There’s hope, however, it seems that Geekbench messed up the chipset model number. Compare the scores to those of a Moto G4 (S617), the Redmi Note 5 scores noticeably higher in the single-core test.

There’s more – here are the scores of the vivo X9 Plus, which is also listed with MSM8952. Much closer, right? And a trip to our database reveals that this model uses Snapdragon 653.

So there is still hope, perhaps the early software of the phone tripped up Geekbench. The 3GB of RAM are not ideal, but not bad for a budget device – it starts at just CNY 999 / $150 / €130. Quite the bargain for a 5.5” screen, a 16MP + 5MP dual camera and a chunky 4,000mAh battery.
