ZenFone 3 Laser units in Canada not able to make 911 calls, Asus says working on a fix [Updated]

Update: Asus has now revealed that the issue "occurs on an older version of OS (v7.0) still installed on the Zenfone 3 Laser or Zenfone 3 Deluxe 5.5". As a remedy, users are being advised to install the Android 7.1.1 update.
"In the case of new product sales, all ZenFone 3 Deluxe 5.5” and ZenFone 3 Laser devices will receive the FOTA update upon activation," the company said.
Original story follows:
Asus has issued a formal statement following reports that the Canadian variant of its ZenFone 3 Laser smartphone is unable to make 911 calls. The Taiwanese company has said that it's working to fix the issue.

"On July 6th, 2017 we were made aware that there had been a reported case of a ZenFone 3 Laser device in Canada being unable to complete an emergency 911 call," a company spokesperson said.
"Our customer’s safety is our number one priority and we want them to be rest assured that we have taken immediate action to investigate this matter. Our team has been working nonstop with all parties involved, to investigate the cause and to determine a solution."
There's no information on what caused the issue, but Asus did confirm that there are no such reported problems with units sold in other markets around the world.
Meanwhile, carriers like Telus have started sending out SMS alerts to subscribers, warning them about the issue.
