I bought this phone couple months of its release.

Issues I had with in month of release that are now gone:
*crashed when set to silent mode with custom time limit
*thumb scanner not working

Actual issues that still bother me:
*glass is not very scratch resistant. My last phone oneplus 6T had better scratch resistance
*thumb scanner is in akward place for me, but people like Linus (ltt) seemed to like this better. I found 6T placement to be much easier in daily use.
* does not really bother me that much, but minimum sound level is loud compared to other phones. Something to take note of though.
* it is bit thicker than I though. worth it if that is what it takes to make it repairable though.

Why I bought this phone:
I am still happy with my purchases. I really liked when i was able to fix issues like broken chargeport and switch battery of my nexus phone and I kinda missed with 6T. 6T is still repeirable, but their newer phones are nightmare to open and service. Other thing that I really hated with oneplus was that they stopped providing security updates after 3 years which fairphone has addressed. I really don't need latest phone but i want to be able to do small fixes and use it at least 5 years. If they can provide support for 8 years that is awesome.

Sadly industry is going toward throwaway culture where everyone tries to make something that works few years and then they sell you new one. For most people it is somekind of status symbol to have newest phone. If you are fine with not showing off that way this phone is something to consider. They are small player in the industry which will also show in end price. Plus those extra support years are not cheap either (you gotta pay your software engineers) which means disposable phones are cheaper option if you indeed buy new one every 3 years. If you however would like a phone that you dont have to switch away in 8-10 years and don't mind having wireless charging I would pick this one. It does come with easily replacable battery so there is that. Sadly i haven't found battery charging station where you could charge your additional batteries with out the phone.

This phone is... moreThe Fairphone 5 may not use the latest chipset, but any upgrades in modern chipsets is unlikely to have a huge overall impact like it used to. Longer loading times and stutters may become more prominent in 10 years, but often it is the software that are designed around planned obsolescense, not that the hardware cannot keep up.

The chipset was chosen in this case as it receives longer life-support in terms of hardware and security updates by Qualcomm, which makes it easier for Fairphone to support the phone for many years to come. I'm sure if the latest chipset was designed with the same sustainable mindset, they would have chosen that instead. But yeah, it is indeed a trade-off for high-spec enthusiasts.

justasmile, 10 Apr 2024That chipset ain't gonna last the same length.Last in terms of what? Durability? speed? Everyone have different use cases. My Poco F1 from 2018(almost 7 years old) is still perfectly usable to this day. I just needed a battery replacement for it last year. As long as you temper expectations at that point, then you shouldn't worry too much.

I don't need the highest end specs or anything, but the 8 year of support is incredible. user replaceable parts is also a huge plus. I'll buy one eventually but I'll wait for a price drop first lol
