Sharp will have a 4K smartphone display ready in 2016

The Japanese company is apparently already developing the super high resolution panels.

I think you guys are missing the point....it's not whether our eyes can tell the difference between full HD and 4K resolution on a small screen such as a smartphone, its because we need 4K screens because our smartphones already take 4K video footage and they can only be played back on 4K screens, for e.g i shot some footage in 4K with my Samsung Galaxy S5 and it refuses to play even on the powerful Tab S 8.4 Tablet
And currently there is no other smartphone i know of except my Note 4 which can view what i just shot with the S5
So for me i can't wait for 4K resolutions on smartphones, in order to see the video footage i shoot in the first place

Regardless of whats your processor capability. so, take the gpu, give them the most core available for the type design and max out the gpu bus. better still, give them dedicated RAM, and if needed the can be shared with system RAM. be it fruit company or the biggest manufacturer, all will be blown till kingdom come

      Current dpi resolutions exceed printing standards, the average person can't even recognize a single pixel by getting as closer as they can on many smarphones and tablets, this is a total waste...

          Anything above HD or FULL HD is overkill and useless. The only reason why the manufacturers keep increasing the resolution is the capitalism. They brainwashed the people and article authors on mobile sites so people think that "higher" is "better". They forget about that it's pointless. And the GPUs and batteries can't keep up with the higher screen resolutions.
          And other people who want a high-end phone, doesn't have a choice. Only Sony made a phone with high-end GPU and lower screen resolution: this is the Z3 Compact.

          Look at for example the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact. The Z3 Compact is much much better than the standard Z3. Why? Because the Z3 Compact has lower screen resolution, but still has the same GPU. So the Z3 Compact is much smoother, the games are running faster, ...

            I get how many people are annoyed at phones having 2k and soon to be 4k screens, but... The way technology advances, at such a speed, a 4k screen won't mean much, it'll be beyond clear, but also I doubt it'll affect the battery. Batteries will gain in capacity, phone specs such as a CPU will be more efficient, and they may even have mobile charging methods such as sunlight, or shaking it, or whatever!

            Content will start shifting to 4k anyway. Imagine cameras on phones in 2016, you'll be shooting in 4k and be able to watch it back in all it's glory. You'll be able to take insanely large megapixel pictures and be able to zoom in so much without the quality pixelating...

              For those who think smartphones with that kind of resolution is ok they dont understand crap how it affects them.

              Truth be told at some point we WILL have smartphones at 4k(or more) without battery/performance problems, but NOT NOW and definitly not in 2016 (or even 2020) unless you will want to charge your phone 2-3 times a day ofc. wich is ridiculous and common already.

              Sure technology has to advance, but sometimes it needs to advance in the right direction, and that direction is the screens technology and energy efficiency and NOT MORE PIXELS!
              Specially with the same technology we current have, cpus/gpus/batterys), and i doubt it will change soon.

              Whats next? a 10000mah powering up a smartphone? Do you guys even know what can you power up with 10a/h? its insane having that in a smartphone, and the strange thing is chip makers are worried about energy consuption in their chips, always were.

              But screen companies dont give a crap apparently, they just want to make the most pixel absurd screen for smartphones pr they will loose market, aparently there are alot of consumers who need to look at facebook and take some pictures with smartphones with those retared resolutions.

              PCs had 1080p/720p along time ago even now those are the most common resolutions around can you guess why?

              Because PC users want to do more than look at facebook and photos.

              They want to play this new generation of games, they want to work and they want hours of battery.

              And if 99% of pc users CANT play decent games at qHD (i wont even mention 4K) dont bother wining about "too much temple run and flappy birds clones in the android IOS markets give us decent games" because THEY CANT and because of this pixel retarded trend.

                      lol, 29 Oct 2014give me any 1080 phone that appear like the left picture It's obviously meant to be scaled to pixel size on 4K screen and zoomed in to same position on 1080p. But honestly it's just an effect.

                      I don't really see a reason for this high of a resolution, other than watching high-res pictures and movies, but for real.. who does that on a phone!?!

                      I sure hope that manufacturers will use this technology they put into phones efficiently, not just measure d**ks with each other.

                        when 16K will be out in 2018 everybody will say 4K is good who needs 16K

                          hmmm. i see a lot of the postings ridicule the use of such display panels on a cellphone. no matter what is said technology will never stop advancing because some of the inhabitants dont need it. this is the blunt truth. for certain areas like medical field it coild be fruitful to have. even in research it coild be useful. so being to quick to judge is unwise. as we speek ur bettery issues are about to be solved. an Israeli company is creating a 30 seconds to change battery, in short u plug in the device for 30 seconds to get the battery to full power. i dont know why complain when solutions are so nearby. the battery model was revealed this year in june. so what u need is in its final stages. its simple if u cant increase the density of the power in a battery pack then shorten the charging time and that maybe next gen tech.

                          technology, what would we be without it!

                            I bet the pixel density won't matter that much for battery life. When the phone is doing something battery-intensive like gaming, they will probably switch to 1080p (1/4 of 4K, so it should downsample nicely). For still photos/backgrounds, the battery difference won't be that much between 1080p and 4K. No reason not to have 4K displays if it doesn't impact battery life much and doesn't cost more.

                                        Seriously? How is that copmarsion image a representation of how sharp the screens are? the difference is nothing like that on a small screen. infact the difference between 400ppi and anything above is only noticeable if you take a REALLY close look at the screen. if you normally use it there's not difference. There is however a significant difference in power consumption which is not only due to the processor needing to process more but also because you need more power to light up the screen just as bright as one with less ppi.

                                        This is not only marketing, they're using smartphone consumers as the milk cows to make the technology ready for other fields where it will have an actual use (like virtual reality, the difference will be significant). it gives you NO advantage when used in a smartphone
