Anonymous, 03 Nov 2014He is right! I want 4k on my phone, 1440p is so so last yea... moreThe first UHDTV production monitor was intoroduced in June 2001 by IBM. Which could all mean, 4K is so last 2001. LOL. At least in digital television and digital cinematography, 4K and 8K are old tech news.

FEI, both 4K UHD (2160p) and 8K UHD (4320p) are considered under UHDTV category. Both of which are two digital video formats proposed by NHK with the latter having a detail level closer to IMAX's 15/70 mm and features 22.2 surround sound as Super Hi-Vision.555. In graphics display resolution, 4320p (8K) is dubbed FUHD.

And we cannot just say, 8K is the successor to 4K just because 8K has a higher resolution. But they were both proposed simultaneously and were considered under UHDTV on proposition.

However, in the mobile world, eventually, 8K shall slowly succeed 4K as 4K shall gradually surpass 2K inevitably. Even I do not want a time to come when handsets are stuck at 2K displays. I even want smartphones to either keep up or exceed existing commercially available 4K UHD TVs. Say, smartphones could try to skip 4K and straight up implement 8K :-)

mas39, 03 Nov 2014What a useless innovation, which idiots are actually going ... moreHe is right! I want 4k on my phone, 1440p is so so last year. I want to only see pixels through quantum microscope. And while we're at it we better make displays which would look less shabby for those few people who see 4 basic colors instead of 3. I mean what about them? Sure there are like 10 such people in the whole world but we.gotta.make.the.screens better.

Who needs this foldable rubbish? You could take your tablet in your back pocket you say? Who cares for such nonsense. All I want is 4k screens and panels with 4 base colors (4 subpixels) for the tetrachromates among us...

    Gimme better screens! *panting*

Anonymous, 03 Nov 2014Will Apple sue them because Apple already invented bendable... moreTrue perhaps. But unlike Apple, perhaps Samsung and LG, again, will keep mum about their Galaxy Round and G Flex respectively and not go suing just about any company when talking about such technology. Both of which came long before the latest iPhones but didn't gain as much popularity. So yeah, tech isn't new, they don't have to battle this out. One might want to read my previous comment about Xerox. I'm still waiting for the rumor of the G Flex 2 which emerged a few months ago to become a reality

DantE O2, 02 Nov 2014doesn't look like it, amoleds have a long history yet they... moreSeveral companies such as Samsung and LG have successfully developed a bendable battery already, though it still need to take years to further research and develop in order to enable it to be mass produced in cheap cost.

Anonymous, 03 Nov 2014Wtf? Samsung has had flexible OLED displays for a while now... moreDon't forget LG :-)

It's not like Samsung, LG, Apple or other companies own curved displays, flexible displays, nd the like. More often than not, hardware parts (displays included) are produced by other companies for them to compile into a phone and call it their Galaxies, their Gs, their iPhones, or their Xperias, etc. Somtimes they can even have a common supplier (or even assembly facilities) for their parts, such as Sony cameras/lenses/sensors being used by various phones by various brands. Case in point for assembly - Foxconn.

My point being, it's less like 'copying' or 'inventing,' and more like utilizing technology and hardware to work together as one. If I come to think of it, these procedures make projects like Ara viable and possible. It's just a question of whether the masses will be able to perceivably understand how it works upon its commercial introduction. Even I don't expect the masses to positively receive such relatively new project on its first day launch - maybe critically but not too positively.

Yet, it's even more complicated than just organizing hardware and tech. They'll have royalties, licenses and patents to pay with companies they sign to deal with or agree to contract with. These points I made are just my opinion(s). I don't require nor expect anyone to believe in or adhere to them.

But fact - the development of flexible display was first conceptualized and prototyped by Xerox PARC and the first one being produced in the 70's using electronic paper or e-paper by a PARC employee :-)
