      it's hardly a surprise,
the name "Sony Xperia" is synonym to bad quality and worst after-sales service here.

but it's not 100% their fault,
Sony Mobile doesn"t have its own manufacturing plant and has to use the OEM / ODM.
Sony has no absolute control on the phones' QC.
that's why the QC is hit and miss.

so if you're lucky, you will get the one with good quality, but if you"re out of luck, you will get the defect one.

These days each component in a phone is the specialization of one company so it wont need too many employees to assemble a phone or it will cost more!!... Sony always using lower end chipsets than samsung.. Thats one I know.
Each manufacturer has a personality and ppl of the like buy respectively. There is so much competition that there is no more real innovation. Like NOKIA used to be. Sony goin insane putting z after z like its the end of the end. Im still with my xperia s, will buy the z4.. If it comes around. Revolutionize the camera, latest chipset even an exynos 14nm, nice sharp looks for the sharp ppl. Cant do crappy? specs and expect to build profit, must be confident for once in phone section.

SONY MUST DO SEVERAL CHANGES OR IMPROVEMENT FOR THEIR SMARTPHONES:
          1)50-67% less devices,
2)8-12 MP camera is more than OK (with bigger or better photo sensor), with better software-algorithm for camera (photo and video), also optical stabilization; xenon flash and camera protection for their flagship smartphones
HERE THEY MUST BE NO.1 among other smartphones
3)improvement in software for music and video players
4)without water protection, only dust protection
          5)update software every 1-2 months
          6)only removable batteries
          7)release theme creator
8)maybe another one OS(windows 10 OS, iOS, MeeGo OS, Symbian OS) with big improvements for the same devices
          9)remove the shortcuts from display
10)AND FINALLY THEY MUST BETTER PROTECT THEIRS SMARTPHONES, OBVIOUSLY SONY IS TARGET OF HACKERS FOR A LONG TIME !
          THANK YOU SONY ! :-)

Apple products are not more or less quality then other manufactures but they stay strong as once you go apple it is hard to get away as your music, file, Photo are all on Apple and transferring them are a real pain. They became the strongest due to the original innovation and beautify styling they have and they keep their customers due to Itunes and many other tactic that make it hard to leave. Apple users are like lemming and want all their friends and colleague to follow them off the cliff and when the likes of Samsung make the errors they do with bad and slow updated (Galaxy S3) and the false promises companies like Samsung make that then fall short once they have your money (e.g. SGS3 event wireless charging, SGS4 event health band/work personal separation...)push more unwitting people Apples way. The Apple strategy and bad practice of Android hardware manufactures make Apple stronger year on year. Most people don't want all the BS that comes with Android hardware firms, they go Apple and then they know that they have a fair device with known issue, its sh*t but glittery, pretty sh*t that you don't have to rationalise to others.
Sony are a great Device manufacture with some great ideas (waterproofing, Compact range...)but fall down in some key areas. My next phone will be a Sony depending on the the Z4 Compacts spec and 3 month review. They clearly have some problems and have not reinvented themselves with any certainty of who they are in the modern Era. I have always loved Sony's top end products but as said previously by others in the know their mid and low end products fall vastly short and give them a bad reputation in the mid and low end market place which is where most people are placed.
I hope Sony recover and learn from the mistakes over the last year but like many I think Sony will become a Media based company and their hardware day are limited.

my first android phone was xperia play, horrible phone by the way, but everything whats came out after seperation from ericsson was decent, to bad what their pricing strategy is not working very well, i think thats one of the huge problems why their struggling

Marco M, 28 Jan 2015Who tries to copy who now? Larger phones, higher screen ... moreYou are really pathetic, you know. You pretend to be a "techie" and you mention iTunes as a condition to use the iPhone. Guess what? I never touched the iTunes app on the iPhone 6(it was my first iPhone). I don't need it. I used iTunes once for my wife's iPhone 6 to transfer all the data from her old iPhone 5. It transferred everything in one go, including the password for the wireless networks, gmail, yahoo and other e-mails accounts she used. She just picked up her iPhone 6 and started using it exactly where she left her iPhone 5. It took 5 minutes to back up the old phone and restore the new one. Try that with a new Android phone. Funny you mention multitasking. Tell me what do you do more on your Android phone than I do on my iPhone? I listen music from Spotify or Safary, I can have a Facetime, Skype conversation while using another app, I use different 3rd party keyboards. What more do you need to do with a phone? Paint? No thanks. BTW, I play guitar. I don't think you have for Android the tools you have on iOS, like tuners/microphones, recording and editing software like Garage Band. And there are plenty of accessories specific for the iPhones that you dont't find for Android phones, like special snap-on lenses for example. A you mention DLNA, Miracast, USB. Please give a a break. I tried to use DLNA when I had a SGS 3, it's a royal pain in the a**. USB? No need, blu tooth works perfectly with any device. And since I bought also an AppleTV(because it has the most/newest movies available) Airplay JUST WORKS AS expected. No surprises(unpleasant) lake with DLNA. So Keep your advices and judgements for yourself. I was on Android for 4 years before switching DEFINITIVELY to iOS.

Marco M, 28 Jan 2015Fanboys help apple sell. Strategic product placment help ... moreI think you are all wrong.

I think Apple's success is sheer luck.

I think it's all Napster's fault! Or actually Napster going belly up.

Hear me out. After Napster failed due to pressure from the music industry Apple stepped in with their iTunes system. They managed to get a deal with the music industry to digitally sell music legally at then a fair price (per song). That in fact paved the path to success for their in-house MP3-player, the iPod. Which put the Apple brand back into the spotlight. Then at the height of the iPod's success they released an iPod+cellphone combo called iPhone. Remember, the original iPhone couldn't even install apps or send texts. It was essentially nothing more than a (poor) touch-based feature-phone annex Music-player. But because of it's iPod-roots it became a success for people who already owned an iPod and wanted a converged device. The added bonus was (at that time) a high-tech capacitive touchscreen. The rest is history.

                            So I blame Napster ;-)

AnonD-357226, 28 Jan 2015No thanks to their abysmal customer service. Has taken them... morethis is unfortunately a problem with all major brands.

Do you know that Sony, Samsung and HTC use the same repair company? In the Benelux they use a Dutch company called Dynafix. They are absolutely the worst of the worst.

These guys can't fix one thing without breaking something else. Provided they even WANT to repair your phone in the first place. Their common excuse to ditch warranty is: fluid or moist damage!

This company is also used by e.g. Toshiba for their laptops.

Couple this with the fact that every electronics device is "made in China" which has become a synonym for crap. With the result of a higher rate in DOA or broken devices after a short period of time. Thus obviously... people turn away from known brands. I can truly understand that people think: "Why buy a known brand and have Chinese crap at premium price? I might as well buy the Chinese crap from a Chinese brand then the price is at least right!"

In fact sometimes it's even hard to find that your device is actually a DOA. Last October I bought a brand new Samsung S4. It switched of at random times. I tried with and without sd-card and/or Sim-card. Bought a new SD-card, gotten a new sim-card etc... I eventually got a new battery. All to no avail. This device should have been replaced immediately because it truly was a DOA but alas. I then I too threatened to sue the shop that sold me that S4. Then they finally replaced it with a brand new S4 which I denied because I originally had the Deep Black version which I preferred over the original misty black. To cut a long story short I ended with an S5 (late December). Which at first I didn't want. I really wanted that S4 because I needed a phone with call-recording enabled and investigated that the S4 was the only (higher end) model with call-recording enabled without rooting (even over a BT connected headset). Luckily the international S5 can also record-calls without root (though unfortunately not when connected to a BT headset).

All in all I must say, the S5 is a definite improvement over the S4. In the end I got full call-recording enabled (with root of course). So in my case it ended well.

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2015Because Samsung at least has removable batteries (Well less... moreTheir sales is also dropping because it's becoming more and more hip to slag-off Samsung. Just as many tech-savvy people slag-off iPhones. Don't forget that tech-savvy influential people are usually the once that guide fellow family or friends into buying new devices.

And if everyone keeps repeating how bad Samsung phones are then eventually people's interest towards Samsung products will wane. Even if Samsung's phones are in reality improving.

In fact I liked my previous S3, especially with the extended battery and cover, and I like my S5 also with thicker cover (wireless charging cover). And after a few tweaks (that aren't really needed for the majority of people) things only got better.

I would have liked any other Android device as well because it doesn't matter what brand I have. I'm tech-savvy enough, like many readers here, to bend any Android device to suit myself. As long as it can do what I want. I just happen to want both a removable battery and card-slot too (on my high-end device) which only Samsung devices offered.

If only those manufacturers had better repair-services when things go wrong. Because their current "partners" like Dynafix really suck :-(
