Tiles are pretty useful, they can show you stuff at the glance on your start screen. They can be customized and so can be wallpaper and it looks great.
Your problem is probably that you never tried using it for a longer time.

The only reason Windows Phone is not selling nicely because of the Tile UI. I personally don't like that and even my friends. So the next choice comes is Android or IOS.
Atleast they should give preference to the people to customize the UI and add themes.
Windows 10 is the future but should be more user friendly and listen to the customers.
