AnonD-89781, 25 Jan 2016windows tablet marketshare is growing while android and ios... moreIn my initial post I described what is the use of a tablet. It's a fundamentally different use than a laptop. What I said is that people who need or want a laptop should buy a laptop. I actually need both so I own both. My tablet is the best information consumption device I own and since we mostly consume information in life, it's the device I mostly use at home and my laptop is my mobile workhorse.

Very distinct uses to the point that I'm surprised how people still can't see the difference, as product segments they couldn't be further apart. Some people don't need a tablet so I advice them to buy a laptop or an 2 in 1 (which is a form of laptop in the way that most I know use it).

Windows Marketplace only grows because it's a tiny segment of the whole market, it's easy to grow while you are as tiny. By contrast it's exponentially more difficult to grow if you're as big as Android or iOS , so no wonder that there are some "corrections".

Having said that there is no indication of any mass migration now or in the near future. The only reason that Windows store is still around is because Microsoft can afford losses (they are at a net loss if you add the years of R&D). Smaller companies like Mozilla shut down those efforts when they see that it's mostly impossible to gain traction at this point.

BTW I'm not saying that Android and iOS having the position in the market that they do is necessarily the best news. I just admit it as a matter of fact and consequently how far shafted we -tablet users- are that companies don't let us access to those vibrant marketplaces with their newer tablets. Basically forcing us to hold on to old tablets (because the new ones are a n objectively giant step back).

when you said people should get laptop instead of tablets thats apply to android tablets too, there is no need of having android phone and tablets. i can think of many place where tablets is better like when you use is on couch or bed, when you want to draw something or taking notes, etc

You can put a lipstick to a pig, it's still a pig... No matter what skin you'd use kodi would still be button pusher. Tablets, especially media players are the real of gestures.

Yes you can find thousands upon thousands of apps for modern ui, just like it is the case for windows phones. But they all have on thing in common, they're sub par at best.

Face it , there's no vibrant market on Windows, the margins are nowhere near android's or iOS, so you can't seriously expect quality under such circumstances (with some exceptions of course).

That's also the reason why I see windows tablet guys revert to desktop use eventually. Buying a tablet and using it like a laptop, I mean what's the point? (why not buy a laptop to begin with)...

There are some good ideas on modern ui. But the same can be said about windows phones. Bad apps is what eventually kills a product. Except in tablets we're stuck with qdead platform. It's the night of walking dead unffirtunately

"and even office files' editing which are *all* optimized for touch instead of the f@ckin mouse" (you were talking about office for android being better)
to think that windows 10 office is optimised to run on mouse show you dont own surface pro because it is new revamped UI optimised from scratch to run on touch devices.

so if there is more content does it make browsing better? if you run youtube full website in windows and android do you get same experience?

i said kodi to give you example there are hundreds or thousands of media player in windows, do you know you can change UI of kodi? kodi can look like mx player or apple tv or google tv or anything you like.

there is gestures in windows 10 which allow you to navigate desktop,
-three fingers swipe up you get task view where you can switch between opening application
-three fingers left/right switch between current and next/previous app
-three fingers down return to desktop
to answer your question you dont need mouse and keyboard to do split screeen in windows 10 there is feature called snap where you just drag windows to their repective corner and boom split screen multitasking.

The correct thing to do is to emulate windows by using android, so we can run windows application in android. and do you know there is a linux application called 'wine' which has been used by all linux (and mac) users to run windows application? this application is now still being ported to android. in future we can run many windows pc applications using our android devices.
windows is no longer needed in the future, because we will be able to run windows apps using other operating systems.

-even microsoft run unixes in their servers (not windows)-

AnonD-89781, 25 Jan 2016android tablets just use overblown mobile apps, you tell me... moreI didn't say office is better, I said it's usable for quick edits (because really that's the most you can do on a tablet). I was accounting it on the pluses of modern tablets and I only compared it to the desktop experience.

No tablet browsing is not blown up phone browsing, there's 4 times the content and you don't have to deal with those unsightly mobile pages (there is a tablet version to most).

Kodi? Seriously? That piece of crap UI is exactly the kind of pluralistic BS that I have in mind when I'm thinking of desktop like experience. Anything you do there takes like 5 times the time. Plex is better, still bad... Have you ever used mxplayer? I mean really? Cause in my tablet it plays everything, downloads subs on the fly, let's me manipulate them, manipulate the image itself , pause , play all without one button press. I literally push no button ever. The GUI of PCs translates rather poorly to tablets and I'm afraid Windows tablets are guilty of exactly that crap.

Windows only splits vertically. I hope you don't mean desktop Windows as splitting the screen, because regular windows is another desktop GUI feature that does not translate at all to tablets.

Yeah there are news aggregators in Windows, used some of them in a vain attempt to make my Surface pro handle like a tablet. At best they're like the offering you'd see on android/iOS 5 years ago, at worse they're completely unusable.

Lastly yeah, you can emulate android. But apart from defeating the point (why buy Windows if you are to run android on top), it's dead slow and kills the battery in no time. It's not even funny how slow it is. My Surface Pro 4 running AMI Duos (fastest android emulator) had actually choppier performance than my 2.5 year old tablet. Way to go for a $1000+ device.

If you want a mobile gaming device be my guest, but as tablets they're subpar. Some people don't like tablets, all the power to them, but why do we (who look to replace our aging tablets) have to deal with f@ckin windows is beyond me. A lot of us are not gamers and already own a laptop, I even welcome ones with basic tablet capabilities (surface pro series), but damn do I *need* a good new tablet and I simply can't find it.

Apart from Sony nobody else released one yesteryear and I don't buy Sony products sooooo ... yeah, we live in the year of bad ideas in ultramobiles.

Obvi... moreandroid tablets just use overblown mobile apps, you tell me what do you gain when you use android tablet in which note 5 cant do. if no then you will still face horrible experience even if you use tablet

media player is not something you click everytime, you just have to drag your video then watch it you can use hundreds or even thousands of desktop apps which are way better than mx player. A good example is plex or KODI they are optimized for touch.

at first you said office is better in android and now you said its secondary use because you realise its better in windows?

what thing can not be splited? mention it here and theorotically you can have unlimited splits in windows not just 4.

i dont use those reading apps but i know there are plenty of apps to read rss like fedora and nextgen reader.

do you know windows tablet can emulated android? and there are more than 20 million desktop apps waiting for your tablet. just imagine dolphin emulator, pcsx2, all those real games you just have to buy controller and you are good to go.

AnonD-89781, 24 Jan 2016I have note 5 and i can tell you it is pain to browse on mo... moreA note 5 is not a tablet. I was talking about Tablets. Obviously Note 5 would be a relatively bad experience, it's way too small... Also you missed my point, browsers are a lot less central on mobiles anyway. The things you do on your desktop browser, you can do it in a better way if you use apps, so that argument is moot too, mostly because you use your mobile browser for less things anyway...

I've used VLC modern. MXPlayer >>> VLC modern. Downloads subtitles, full gesture support, plays pretty much everything (VLC does too, but still), much more miminal UI (basically since everything is gesture based the UI is non-existant most of the times), etc...

Office OK, but Office is of secondary use on a tablet. That was basically my point. Why buy a tablet for modifying office documents, that's not its intended use. If you happen to make niche use to your tablet, all the more power to you, but you're a minority.

Lastly I've used Windows' Split Screen. You cannot split wherever you like. Also no 4-way split like Samsung Tablets can do. It's a step to the right direction, but has many features lacking.

Also I've get to find a reader like Google Books, or even one good News aggregator for Windows tablets. Basically Windows Tablets suffer from the same bug as Windows phones, no appzzzzz

about split screen clearly you didn't use windows 10 or 8, it has better split screen multitasking compare to any mobile os, and in windows multi tab and multitasking really work well no reload or resume of apps its just instant. how many tab can you open in your phone and manage them easly? what time it take to switch between lets say tab 7 and 11?

you know thet office in windows 10 was built from scratch to support touch ui? nothing beat microsoft office thats a plus to windows tab and not mobile os. about players there are lot of players like vlc modern app.

Have you ever used a mobile browser on a moderately new Samsung/LG/iPad/Huawei?

The split screen feature alone makes browsing on mobile so much better than desktop chrome or Firefox. Add the much more appropriate DPI ,proper pen support (hovering feature) where can be found, app connections.

Also the browser is much less needed because of the specialized apps to begin with. Basically that's my point. Most of the time you don't need a browser. A news aggregator is million times better than simple RSS feeds. And don't get me started on readers (Google books), players (Mxplayer) and even office files' editing which are *all* optimized for touch instead of the f@ckin mouse.

Using Windows on a tablet makes me feel like I made a jump to 00s, it's ridiculous how bad everything is.
