24 February, 2016
The confirmation came in the form of a Facebook comment by the German arm of the Japanese company.

Maybe Z series is reserved for Windows Mobile 10 OS, it will be known as Sony Z (Xperia is for X series only). Or Samsung pay Sony to stop using Z for their smartphone.

I always thought X series was top tier audio parts. Like X series Walkmans.
They might be trying to cash in on that.
It is hard for me to have faith here, as they started pushing the trend for High Definition audio (just like the rest of the market players) once compressed formats had no further 'improvements' to make. (Remember bullet points on spec sheets need to show IMPROVEMENTS or we the consumer show little interest)
I have some MDR-1 Bluetooth headphones that were the generation before the ones with 'high def' marketing literature. The driver units are to my research extent, the same. This is their new frontline: high def audio.

What might an X series design offer? (In terms of audio-)
A Sony engineer confirmed that he came up with over forty 'solder recipes' when dropping lead from solder happened. He was trying to find a new solder that would 'sound right'.
This is the reason why buying Sony technology is worthwhile.

Not all Sony stuff is amazing. In fact a lot of it is mass market with a Sony logo slapped on.
But,.. When they get it right, and Sony developed 'coolness' is involved they have killer products.
I worked in a camera store that didn't sell Sony and had to buy from competitors when Sony BSI sensors first hit. (Technically I could have bought a Nikon 7000; and I did buy one of the first TX5's out of HongKong months before dpreview got ahold of one)

So whether it be something like a crazy custom sound converter (with equalisers that do not affect the sound quality) or a dual DAC design, (LDac is what we know so far about this X series), there is a chance that the lineup name have is, as they say, a design focus change.

4K screen (on z5premium) was likely a market test, that, fortunately for we consumers FAILED to drive sales the way they hoped.

With regards to battery not being 'big enough'
mAH; not all numbers are equal, battery cell design can optimise for different power draws and charge speeds/longevity etc.
I know of many times where a brand name battery of way lesser milliamp hours has much more juice than cheap ones.

Let's not force market leaders to our misunderstood and misled mindset.
Engineers, at the top of their game, should be able to design a whole system that works well.

Unfortunately for Sony, half the time their killer feature doesn't even get listed in the literature.

They are a Japanese company that has no clue on how to market to the west.

I think they have some great ideas here, and this phone looks great.
(And I like flush or recessed camera lenses)

With any luck, audiophiles (not a nasty word) will find the sound output for these to be equivalent or better than the Z3. (Which is the gold standard for mainstream/mass produced audio devices, as talked about extensively on 'headfi' and other audio forums)

I would rather not carry a seperate outboard DAC and amplifier (and given readers penchant here for hating outboard battery bricks to recharge their phones), would be nice to have a phone with the right 'guts' built in!

When T-Mobile Poland revealed plans from major companies in H1 2016, there are only 2 unidentified Xperia devices displayed on their timetable which I could assume by now, they could be any of the 3 recently unveiled Xperia X series. But this is T-Mobile and specifically T-Mobile Poland which does not reflect plans of T-Mobiles from other countries or regions and does not reflect plans of other carriers around the world

I dont support this move from Sony. Many people including me are still waiting for the announcement of Z6 series in Summer/Fall 2016. Also, common people here are talking about the X series being a mid range series with a name and it will take a lot of time for people to actually think of X series as the sole flagship of 2016 and a lot more time to actually go and buy it because for us, being premium means a Z device not any other alphabet. If Sony succeeded perfectly in anything, that was the brand positioning they did with the Z series and now looks like they want to kill it with their own hands. *Sigh* Sadness everywhere.

Bad move Sony. You are basically cannibalizing your own brand. Imagine what will people think when you suddenly change your Z flagship its pretty confusing isn't it.

Also you created the Xperia Z starting with 1080p screen and until today the X series still using 1080p screen. Come on Sony, sorry to say the truth but most Android fans cares about numbers and the screen apart from just the appearance.

Makes sense. That's why no M5 or C5...it was a nice way to end with the Z5 Premium tho!

I'm REALLY hoping this news isn't true :S
Comon Sony - DO SOMETHING before it's too late!

I just had a friend from Germany do a proper translation. The translations are almost 100% accurate, but Sony also said that it's just a name change. Instead of continuing under the "Z" series, it will now be known as the "X" series. So we should still see the "X Compact", "X Ultra/Premium", etc.

Not news I was hoping to hear... I feel so much disappointment... I'm hoping this turns out to be false.

this actually could work out good for sony. i just hope they eliminate the 6 month cycle for a yearly cycle. compact versions would be most welcome though.

This is Sony flagship of the year ? then they are defeated before they even begin. Why should i buy this over Samsung S7 ? or even LG G5 ? and how knows what the other companies have down the road like HTC and Apple.

Well we all thought that Sony will not release any phone on mwc but we are all caught off guard when they revealed the X series. I think they'll not ditch the Z series due to the fact it's always their flagship device. Just saying.
