AMD announces Radeon Pro SSG video card with 1TB of SSD memory

The company showed that the architecture in the Radeon Pro SSG scrubs an 8K video at a rate of 4GB/s, compared to doing the work on the system SSD, which averaged 900MB/s.

O.o whats with the negative comments...they managed to put a 1tb graphic card...well the theoretical equivalent..to get the vram equivalent, it will be like a mini super computer...this is a practical albeit costly method to render those raw 4k videos for future movies...so blu rays will be raw 4k rather than remastered....good going amd

        This isn't for consumer grade stuff.
        Admittedly the Titans at least might not be crippled by nvidia drivers for floating point etc.. usually nvidia keeps quadros as the unlocked card.. TBH I have stopped reading every news article about gaming cards, as there is only so much I can learn at any given time, and still raise a family and earn a crust...

        But 8k video is beyond the awareness of everyday tech people. It is for industry usage.
        High frame rate/3d at high colour depth at high resolution,.. and maybe rendering toy story 5.

        The average consumer is happy with 6bit colour tn panels and doesnt get why plasma was for videophiles.
        Most people never even calibrate a screen or aim for a light controlled environment in their playback chain, so probably don't understand what goes into making' source'

          This is not a card for gaming, it is a work station card and will be highly useful when you need to render a large scale cinematic scenes.

                I can buy 2 new nvidia titan x, and 2 M2 Raid 0 1T SSD, 64gb ram, and Core i7-6950X...with that kind of money, still have plenty of dollar left. What is AMD thinking?

                  This is working cache for the video card,.. for pro applications.
                  Thsnarticle alludes to benefits for high bandwidth processing,... knowing that the future is wide colour gamuts, and high resolution, this would have applications, maybe at a 'hollywood' level.

                  This isn't for gaming.
                  Yes, it is made by a company that makes great bang for buck cards, and is ethical for its consumerbase.

                  Glad they can use their intelligent designs to offer some crazy level compute/film industry stuff.

                  There is a bread and butter market there, 'if you build it they will come'.
                  Having owned some high end nVidia cards, that don't cripple floating point to 1/24 speed (By drivers,( to force high end sales).. and colour depth etc).. I just cannot ethically buy an nVidia product anymore. (more to do with gameworx intentional cripllings, cough, oxymoron, cough, and not evolving drivers for last gens card on purpose etc)

                  So glad to see AMD pull off stuff like this.
                  I hope it doesn't affect card design such that we get cards built for hollywood that get refunctioned as desktop gaming cards.
                  Their needs are totally different.

                  All the same amd will allow me 14bit colour output, whereas consumer class nvidia, through drivers locks me down.
                  (Not always, eg gtx590 didn't, but exception, not the rule)

                    AnonD-170381, 27 Jul 2016I don't think combine everything into a pair slot is good thing .I'm also wondering how it would perform when read/write intense operations are coupled with high GPU demand... At least it's PCIe 3.0 so lack of bandwidth there isn't, usually graphics cards, even the highest end ones, don't cap the bus (some may even work on x1 2.0), usually just multi GPU solutions take more data. Could actually be using an underused bus to it's full potential, hopefully that's what happens.
                    True as well that if the GPU goes kaput you won't boot if that's your system drive.

                            Indeed this is basically what the card is doing, when not in full use of the bus for video tasks, it will perform as a PCIe x16 SSD controller.
                            No idea what would happen when the card is at full power (specially if in Crossfire X) and the IO operations are required on the SSD.

                                      Seems like GSMArena didn't cover this properly. As far as I could see this card can be used as a combination of graphics card and system cache drive (like an SSHD or so). Then it's pretty obvious the advantage of the card's way faster controller, store most used files on this drive and it will be beyond fast. In fact seems like this blows away any RAID 0 setup, being only matched (if even this) by PCIe SSDs.

How do you store ... moreIf you read GSMArena's own article it doesn't state anything about that SSD array being used for anything other than the card's cache. If it can be used as system drive or system's cache drive (like SSHDs do) then it makes more sense. This article tho is way too shallow.
