AMD announces Radeon Pro SSG video card with 1TB of SSD memory

26 July, 2016
The company showed that the architecture in the Radeon Pro SSG scrubs an 8K video at a rate of 4GB/s, compared to doing the work on the system SSD, which averaged 900MB/s.

divis200, 26 Jul 2016It can be used as super fast storage. You should check the ... moreyeah GSMArena doesn't state much more than just "for cache". That's beyond vague as CPUs have also their own cache, RAM is a type of cache if you think of it on that way, just saying it's cache is like saying the videocard processes video.

If it can be used as a system storage then it makes sense, specially since it seems this one's controller is way faster than the motherboard ones.
If not then I really can only see it as a raw video editing addition, which can make sense if you work on some huge stuff like 4K professional movies, but pretty much no reason for who won't work with this.

"The performance differential was actually more than I expected; reading a file from the SSG SSD array was over 4GB/sec, while reading that same file from the system SSD was only averaging under 900MB/sec, which is lower than what we know 950 Pro can do in sequential reads. After putting some thought into it, I think AMD has hit upon the fact that most M.2 slots on motherboards are routed through the system chipset rather than being directly attached to the CPU. This not only adds another hop of latency, but it means crossing the relatively narrow DMI 3.0 (~PCIe 3.0 x4) link that is shared with everything else attached to the chipset."

For people who dont understand why it have such storage for cache.

                VIDEO EDITING

Open any RAW video, edit it, and render it.... and then you gonna understand why such storage is really important.

When you fancy phone record 4k videos, editing such video is totally different story, because video editor and rendering need to split such video from top to bottom as a separate frames... and when you have 4k video in 30fps, you need to save 30 frames for each second that take even 4mb... and its just one second. And for every 1GB of video you need almost 3GB for cache.
Speed and storage space is more important than cpu power, because you can have super fast cpu and RAM... but your HDD slow it down so all that hardware need to wait for our hard drive to read/write that info...

I can't properly understand the reason behind that SSD inside it, well if it's used properly then all OK but I really can't understand it properly. For cache operations I would go with a normal (but high density) RAM instead.
