These companies are not just essential to help the government with taxes but they also employ large amounts of people. between Apple and Google, they employee around 10000 people, who are tax paying citizens.

yym, 31 Aug 2016Apple should pay the fine, they cheated, they were caught, ... moreApple did nothing legal, they just found the right loopholes in tax systems for them to make more money. There is no chance Apple will have to pay that money as everything is legal, you cant blame Apple for being clever enough to find loopholes in tax systems. you need to start blaming the people who made it possible for this to happen. Thats politicians for you.

S7 Edge yay, 31 Aug 201699.9999% correct Not a fine the vast majority is TAX that ... moretax avoidance, apple did nothing illegal they just played it smart with the legal tax system. If Ireland tries to make Apple pay the 13 Billion our economy will see none of that money because that money should be going to the countries that it really belongs to. If Ireland does take that money, not only will we have to give it all away, but more than likely we will lose Apples business in Ireland which has created over 5000 jobs and led to more businesses being attracted to Ireland

I dont get why the Finance-minister would defend Apple. Unless he is deeply involved.

There is no real benefit of having Apple in ones country, if they don't pay taxes.

The tax planning isn't news. I known about this for years. Or not that they now only pay a fraction of 1%, I thought it was still about 1%.

I don't know the exact coporotate structure here.
"In Apple’s case, nearly all of our research and development takes place in California, so the vast majority of our profits are taxed in the United States."

Apple, yes, but how about Apple International Sales?
          Where are they taxed?

Not a fine the vast majority is TAX that Apple did NOT pay
Instead of paying 125,000 euro on the 1,000,000 NET profit it paid 50 euros is a serious underpayment

To LEGITIMATELY pay 50 euros the net profit declared would be 400 Euros so less than an iPhone

Again had they paid 125,000 per 1 Million euros that would be legal
APPLE did NOT misrepresent the extent or underreport the net profit as that would be tax fraud
So BOTH Apple knew and Ireland tax official knew Apple were seriously (or frivously) underpaying

It a bit like TWO fast and furious racers been caught in a speed trap and the COP lets Apple off for being famous. so competition Apple were ONLY paying tax 1 euro when they need to pay 2500 Euros

So here is the thing Apple has a cash reserve of near $1/3 trillion aka $333 billion
                $330,000,000,000

So I glanced twitter and 13Bn Euros could purchase top 8 soccer clubs in the Championship league

As Apple has not move the cash to the USA it has NOT paid top the US approx 33Bn Euros that be ONLY become liable when it does

So I agree I find the Irsish tax ministers position as unexplainable given that Ireland has undergone austerity measures

I do like your take on this and wonder if the minister will keep his job after, as I am suer that despite the lobbyist rhetoric from the USA, that is commited in the USA wheher or not that would result in criminal charges

Apple should pay the fine, they cheated, they were caught, now pay.
It is not like they are the first, other companies paid for illegalities in the same way, apple has to pay more because they stole more, i think this is only fair.
You buy apple products because you love them, in return apple screws you over, buy not paying taxes, taxes that found education and healthcare among other things.

The EU Commission did not tackle this from the point of view of Southern Ireland's right to set its own Corporate Tax legislation. It was the Anti Competition arm of the EU Commission that carried out the investigation and imposed the subsequent fine. Had the Irish government applied the same 0.005% tax rate to ALL companies operating in Southern Ireland then there would have been no case to answer against Apple and the Irish government. It is clear that Apple had been provided with a competitive advantage by the government in order to persuade Apple to set up business in Southern Ireland. Therefore, in my view they are both guilty as hell as charged, the Irish government probably more so than Apple.
