I read about this on other sites, and i must say i'm glad that EU is doing this. What Apple is doing is at the best in they grayest area of the law... It's time someone cracked on these big companies. Everyone should in corporate world should be equal. If a small family store is paying 12.5% taxes, then Apple, Google and other big companies also should pay 12.5% taxes.

It seems Google is next, and while i'm an Android fan, i want them to get what they deserve. They need to learn that rules are for everybody. Especially since in Europe that money is used for stuff like free healthcare, education, which some people really need (if my family were to live in US, we'd go bankrupt six times over just for medical bills...).

And if Apple wants to get out of European market because of this, they're free to do so. Their products will still make it, one way or another, to consumers that really like them (or are too deep into their ecosystem). And the rest will move with what's available.

      P. S. - Please excuse my grammar mistakes, english isn't my first language. Also, please correct me, but be civil about it.

Tom-Helge, 31 Aug 2016You are wrong. Samsung doesn't compete with Apple anylonger... moreLOL Shamesung is always on Apples nose, everytime Apple has new device they always put their flagship ahead 1 number, that started happening after Samsung Galaxy S5, Note 5 and S5 Active, they might have innovated a lot in specs but their designs are just like Crapple, minimal changes and rips out money from users

So does anyone have any data on comparisons of effective tax rates for similar companies? Or do you all rather work with emotions rather than fact?

I'm really interested in this since we have so many business experts in this comments section.

Anonymous, 30 Aug 2016If Ireland is giving special exemption to Apple, then surel... moreBecause it is illegal
What Apple did was to say virtually all its income was international so subject to a very low corporate tax mean in 2014 Apple paid 50 euro on every 1 million euros PROFIT.
What Apple should have paid is 125,000 euros

The amount is back taxes and penalty interest
The 13bn Euro quoted is in the main TAX NOT PAID ie 124950 euro for each million euros profit not paid in 2014
In total Apple did not pay @12.5% for ten years
Apple won't leave Ireland as Ireland has the lowest rates at 12.5% so moving will subject it to higher taxes
The reason why Apple went to Ireland was to avoid USA taxes
Apple hold all this cash in Europe as USA has a 35% tax rate

Once the cash is moved to the USA it is subject to the 35% tax rate
As 12.5 tax had already been paid the differential 22.5 is payable to the USA

As it stand virtually no tax has been paid either to Ireland and as the cash money / profit has not been moved to the USA, USA has not received any taxation money
USA will not receive money whilst it sits in European bank
American companies that operate globally and don't have these avoidance schemes pay 35%

This would not be story if Apple would have paid it's 12.5%

I do not earn a million euros, can I pay 50 euros tax?

mir, 30 Aug 2016We may not like apple but if it shuts down, samsung and all... moreYou are wrong. Samsung doesn't compete with Apple anylonger as Samsung have moved on and have taken their own route many years ago. You can see that route has paid off when you look at how good Samsung's phones are today and how amazing they looks design wise.

What Samsung is competing against is other Chinese brands who makes Android phones.

the official reply from apple is simply ridiculous: apple already agreed to pay 318mn to the Italian tax authority for tax dodging without even appeal.
In this EU case the responsability is shared with the Irish government, they knew that it was an illegal public aid.
