Froyo finally dies in Google's latest Android platform distribution chart

10 January 2017
It happened six and a half years after its unveiling. On the other hand, Nougat is at a measly 0.7%.

It's not that surprising that Gingerbread remains active.

I worked at a pharmacy that happened to have an electronics section with prepaid phones, for the entire five years I've been there the same remaining Gingerbread 2.3.6 LG Dynamic and Samsung Proclaim running 2.3.6 was still being cycled. The packaging started to fade due to mishandling and they decided to give it to me for some reason. God Verizon screwed the early Android adopters hard.

Anyways if retailers won't stop holding stale goods of course Gingerbread will continue to thrive on a breadcrumb.

Tom, 11 Jan 2017I use to post here, and I have Symbian, so what?Well I guess you need a medal. I still have my old HTC hero, which I'll use from time to time, but for Google to still have gingerbread on their radar is a waste of their time is all I'm saying.

It's just google officially ending support for older hardwares due to there requorements. It's still actually possible to run nouget fine via Roma like lineage or AOSP.

They can't comprehend that android updates aren't the same as updating MIUI apps etc and security patches alone. Also they do have poor support over certain devices.. Which is why there is no point in spending that much money for an Android phone. I mean with $800, I can just get a new cheaper mid-range phone every 6-months/year instead.

Then there's Xiaomi. I have new respect for them. I have their cheapest lowest end phone, the Redmi 1S. It's on KitKat, but Xiaomi keeps pushing security patches on it.

PLAYER SLAYER, 11 Jan 2017Google doesn't cut support, nor do most non-Chinese OEM's. ... moreIf you're talking about Snapdragon 800 not supported with Nougat, it's Google's decision. Google put more stringent requirement for Nougat, ie. encryption, that requires hardware that doesn't exist on Snapdragon 800. Without that requirement, Nougat can run on SD800 just fine (Sony has unreleased beta Nougat running fine on SD800 devices).

So Google made the call. It's amazing how people just give Google a pass for anything, while blaming others.

Anders, 11 Jan 2017How is it possible that people posting on a mobile electron... moreDue to Google's own business model, they don't really have control over this. There are still many OEMs selling new (old inventory, but pretty much new) devices with KitKat. And Google made no effort to educate consumers, nor encourage OEMs to at least push security patches. Why? Because it doesn't matter. Google's main revenue is from ads, and they get money as long as you use Android, regardless of version.

It's okay though because Froyo last for many years. Not like iOS, after iOS 10 updates, many older Apple's device like my iPad 3 damn laggy.

How is it possible that people posting on a mobile electronics/phone website still have and use devices running Froyo? My old HTC hero, the one with the chin ran Froyo, and that thing was retired ages ago. One of the big problems the android platform has is keeping all these different versions of android going, and making apps compatible with so many different versions of android.

I'd be happy if Google scrapped GB and ICS, it's time to move on, and keeping roughly 2% of their mobile community happy frankly isn't really worth the trouble in my opinion.

                            RIP Froyo!

Dudi4, 10 Jan 2017Android updates system is the biggest joke ever... Buy a... more I have an iPad and a Nexus tablet of about the same generation. Both are no longer getting system updates. But the Nexus tablet will continue to get browser updates (and other core apps) for a while yet. The iPad gets nothing from Apple. It is stuck for ever on the version of Safari that shipped with the last iOS supported. That's because there is a big difference between the way Android updates work and the way iOS updates work. Most of the actual user experience on an Android device is decoupled from the OS, whereas iOS is like a complete system distribution: iOS is everything to an iOS device, very different to Android.
So Lollipop users get the latest Maps, gMail, calendar, keyboard, Chrome, Google App etc every time there's an update. Users 'stuck' on Lollipop are using a device which is say 80% the same as Nougat; many users wouldn't even notice differences, I think. (80% is subjective, you could measure that: of the way people use the phone, how much of the time are they using it differently between a Lollipop phone and a Nougat phone)?

However, the other thing the system updates bring is security updates, and better efficiency. The situation with security updates is better than it was; my S7 Edge is still on Marshmallow, but it gets monthly security updates. But both my old iPad and old Nexus tablet are no longer getting security updates, although my Nexus tablet will get fixes for bugs in apps like Chrome, gmail. The iPad: no. So the Android device is still better off. As for efficiency (battery life, speed): new hardware has a much bigger impact than OS tweaks.
