Rather unimpressive in the CPU department. I got 1940/6030 on my s7 exynos so barely an improvement.

My iPhone 7 Plus 128GB scored 181608 after a week using. The SoC seems need some time to boot up because the 1st time testing with Antutu scored 170K+.

The whole it simply works never was and probably never will be a real thing.
It's just a made up exaggeration mostly from bias fans and followers.
It's has had a world lead in app crashes for years. It's not always faster at doing things and even when it is many times its barely at all. It's stand by time was well but it's usage time was behind.
Many try to claim it never lags or bugs out but anyone who has used an issue device knows that's a load of bologna. Just some don't like to admit it.
And how is crashing more often any better?
The first ones were even inferior to flip phones. A little more convenient, but couldn't even send mms or record video.
The camera has its aspects but never really trumped.
It's usually had no less the highly off white points and in the past more so than that in its display.
You have to deal with iTunes and convert media like it's some 2005 cheap portable media player.
All while doing less and costing more.
Because apple and their following claim it's better than everything.
Or because it's minutely faster at some tasks than some phones. Woo...and just because it's a little better at some things despite it crashing more and not being better and other things.

So ultimately "best" here is purely subjective buddy.

second, there's no such word as performant, but I get what you are referring to about the so-called "beast" label, S7 Edge can be on that label, as well as OnePlus 3 & 3T, and then few other flagships

S7 Edge was not a beast, what are you talking about? It had less performance than oneplus 3, less battery than plenty of phones, worse camera than pixel XL and HTC 10
By comparison Note 4 had the best camera of 2014, was the most performant device and had potentially infinite battery due to allowing you to use batteries of greater capacity or letting you carry a spare. Its screen even was almost as good as modern screens.
S7 edge actually lost in battery, did not improve in screen quality, improved only slightly in camera and only in raw performance was it a clear favorite , almost 1.5 year after Note 4's release!
You can only call S7 edge a beast if you forget what beasts Samsung used to release. It's actually a sign of how we have lowered our standards. And free markets cannot operate well when we lower our standards , companies would keep producing worse and worse products unless and until we call their BS.

There are phones with much bether camera (Google pixel)
With more Ram (onplus, Asus, Xiaomi) therefore more Ram caching
With better CPU (new Huaweis using the new Kirin)
With less bezels (Xiaomi Mi Mix)
With better fingertip placement
with much better batteries
with much better software (samsung's software would always be amongst the least efficient).

The only thing Samsung may stipple be tops screen quality, but even that may change with higher resolutions and thus better VR experiences coming this year.
Samsung has stopped being the best around the S4/Note 3 era. Note 4 in fact was the lass boss product they ever made. Ever since every generation is worse than the last. They cut corners all over the place. Samsung is far from the best, it's just the most expensive.
