AnonD-5197, 20 Apr 2011I guess misunderstood some of your points and I apologize. ... moreagreed ... hardware improvement will improve the speed ... no doubt ... but just a little example of how bad software can impact your hardware ... while i am not against windows, ubuntu linux can use 1GB RAM with a lesser powered CPU to do everything which windows does ... and it still gives faster user experience ... from this, what I infer is, as soon as a new powerful CPU is out, your existing software experience will improve on that hardware ... but eventualy, the new releases of those crappy programs will give u the same lag on the newer more powerful CPU too ... and hence, you will be running out to bestbuy to get an even more powerful phone to kill that lag. an unending cycle.

However, while I understand your frustration as a software designer and a developer that you have to adapt to the new hardware when you are coming up with a new program, to us regular consumers hardware upgrade as such is almost a direct indication that our user experience with mobile devices will be better. Because to end users it matters not how optimized the software is or how well the software utilizes the maximum potential of the hardware. As end users we pretty much only care about how smooth and fast the applications run and eye candies are bonus. Now, you did mention that there is no application that take full advantage of the powerful hardware out currently, and I completely agree with you. I also agree with you that software should be improving as well as hardware is ideal. I think it's still hardware > software when it comes to speed.
These powerhouse CPU are definitely making difference. The dual-core devices definitely perform better in every way compared to the single-cores. I've seen how pre-production SGSII perform and they are quite an achievement from Samsung regardless of optimization. This IS happening today! I think optimization can come after these hit the market.

Why settle... moreone more thing ... the lag you are referring to is not due to the fact that hardware is slow, its because the software running on it is bad. again, what you have taken as me being against the hardware, is like i am against the bad software. and i am in favor of improving the software too with the hardware. any software which can support lesser hardware well, should support it. it shud not have bad resource management and must utilize both CPU and RAM properly.

Why settle... morei think you have misunderstood my point. i am not against the advancement of hardware ... i am against the big software hardware gap that is out there ... if i am being given windows 98 and i am being asked to run it on a dual core 2.8 Ghz processor, its a total waste of my money to actually go with such expensive hardware ... when samsung will introduce a new processor, the current trend in the industry shows it will automatically devalue the existing phones ... that is natural and is quite acceptable ... but then i will ask the question that the processor that i was using was dual core atrix processor and it was running just android 2.3 which runs smoothly on a single core 1Ghz processor too, so will this new 2Ghz processor be running the same less capable OS/software and it will be relaced soon by new hardware without again being utilized properly by any software?
Moreover, it will increase my knowledge if you may share with me some software which actually is utilizing even 500Mhz processors properly? because the ones you did not like can run easily on even a 300Mhz one and others you have reffered to, only you know of.

This is not surprising that hardware comes first and software comes second.
Or you believe that software should be made before the hardware? Do you think that software can support non-existent hardware?

People who just wants to play "Angry Birds" or "eBay Mobile" can just buy a less powerful phone.
But acknowledge that there are people who use their phone for more than just phone calls, text, simple games etc. There are people who get frustrated at the lags that all phones have currently. Why settle for mediocre performance?
We don't have apps for them? Soon as they hit the market, give it couple months and there will be apps that support it. Come on, look to the future, not the limitations of today.
By the way, CPUs are getting more and more power efficient. The dual-core 1GHz CPUs are rated to be more power efficient than its single-core predecessors. It just gets better and better NOT worse and worse.

Once you have powerful hardware, there are more options to optimize the OS to go along with it, while optimized OS will have a cap on its performance because of hardware. Why have this limit?
One day dual-cores will be standards for phones. Yeah, I'll agree, most people won't need it, but what's wrong with having a head start? Instead of giving Samsung credits for making powerful hardware, you bash it? ridiculous... If you can't keep up with the tech advances, you don't have to keep up with it. Those who will keep up with it can enjoy the benefits that come with it.

It's so funny to see "new processors coming",new connections and new other features but never see someone say "here we designed a super duper battery" ... i agree technology need to advance and we use more and more but what is the point in making something powerfull if you have nothing to power it?

On my dumbphone i can use internet very fast (thanks opera mini) and these sites that are problematic, there is dedicated app that improves experience (i can watch youtube video and fb on a great UI), i can listen to music (and usually in this aspect dumbphones are better) and really great camera (8mpix vga video). Smartphone only win. Hd video and "hd playback" (on non-hd display, so quality the same), "flash" (theres always a better app alternative) and no banners means less shit ads and more fast browser, "hd gaming" with still behind psp first games and most dumbphone has better key layout for that (touscreen and accelerometer sucks here). Its only my. Opinion thought.

On the other hand, immature and narrow minded people have always chosen the most garishly big touchscreens with the most powerful CPUs, and really don't care about battery life or ease of use because their life swirls ONLY around their phone
