The article title is misleading. It should read :

Phone maker and SMARTPHONE OS market shares: Samsung rises, Nokia slips

            http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_os-ww-monthly-200812-201204-bar

            Good point.

However, Nokia really needs to fix a lot of things in Nokia Belle, but at least by aping Android and iOS, it is heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, that direction is being blocked by the Nokia BoD and the CEO Elop.

So... all we can do is wishful thinking.

Nokia still leads, but just not now in the smartphone market. Overall market, Nokia still leads.

Asia, India and Africa would offset everything else.

Nokia is far away from Letest Technology. It cant be competetor for Android.

Rim will bounce back. Their playbook with androidable os 2.0 and the upcoming BB10 phone is a promising start. Nokia have to make 2 strategic changes: make more phones with android os and make their smart phones a little cheaper. I am afraid the only company in real danger in the upcoming years is apple. you cannot keep hoping to keep on growing with 1 phone model every 2 years. In time, you will end up being stale with the same old same old no matter the hype

Samsung is on a roll! Nokia shot themselves in the foot, several times actually. 1st they hire Mr Flop. Then they kill off their major revenue earner symbian. Then they kill off meego the saviour. And now they are putting all their eggs in the wrong basket!! Maybe Nokia does deserve to die

I think major change is coming...

There are rumblings that network providers may stop subsidising iphones as much - which would be catastrophic for them (I suspect they'll offer them more money to keep doing so) as imagine asking customer to pay £400+ for a phone every couple of years... it just wouldn't happen!

I think RIM could go bust... or at at least relegated to business only ventures... like in the old days...

I think Nokia is on a tightrope... they could so easily fall at any moment... maybe if they can get to Q2 2013 with the advent of Winmo8 and MS's tablets, they can start gaining RIM's share and some of the smaller companies'...

And of course if the hype surrounding the GS3 isn't up to expectations... then I think Sammy's lead could be short-lived...

I think there's definitely room (and about time) for a new contender to enter the market... with a new OS...
                                    Something even more innovative...

                                    Who knows??!?!

Biggest shock for me is 27% of the market is held by "Others Manufacturers"...

This means that even tho the top spot is Samsung people are still buying other companys phones. Now that might mean i get a backlash saying that covers a lot of companys,BUT,its a lot of other companys people are spending their money on over the other top companys.

I expect Nokia to be a lot better next year and as apple starts to slide out of favour windows and BB the new fresh O/S will have a bigger share..apple is falling out of favour round my area in fact everyone i know has either dumbphone and dont care,an SGS2 or BB ..Most have swapped apple for SGS2 for more value for money and more FLEXIBLE.
