Galaxy S III has PenTile AMOLED because it lasts longer

11 May, 2012
Samsung says the PenTile AMOLED matrix is more reliable than RGB, that’s why the Galaxy S III uses it.

"....even two or three years after...." - really!? "...even..." Here a proposal for new slogan: Samsung - the worlds leader of Bull S..t. Should I mention that my 1.5 year old $600 Galaxy S is not supported and updated at all anymore....(never seen it working properly since day one!)

This explanation doesn't make any sense.

Why should the amount of blue pixels have any impact on blue pixel life span?

      IMO it's the opposite:

less blue pixels -> individual pixels need to be brighter -> more voltage/pixel -> SHORTER life span

I have SGSII right in my hand and it turns noticeably blue-ish at angle, had to be pretty steep angle but it colour shift definitely there, not like IPS screen I have standing on my desk nearby.

So blue sub-pixels wear faster, and fade over time. This becomes a problem for color accuracy if blue is every 3rd sub-pixel of the display, yet somehow in a pentile arrangement where they are driven harder and more often, this isn't as big a problem? With fewer of them in a set space they are more likely to be lit if any level of blue contributes to the color in that area, and must be driven harder to achieve a similar brightness level in it. Also, if there are fewer blue sub-pixel elements in an area, then degradation in any of them is MORE likely to be noticed, not less, since they have a larger area of effect. Being driven harder, they are also more likely(/seriously) to suffer burn-in.

I call BS, Samsung. I think you just haven't cracked HD SAMOLED Plus manufacturing at this density yet.

rcl4444, 12 May 2012There's a point we're all missing: This can't be true - ... moreActually this is the reason. Blue pixels in pentile can be made bigger in area, which reduces current density and degradation. They still degrade, but this allows make them to degrade in roughly same rate as green ones.

                There's a point we're all missing: This can't be true -

Degradation is a percentage loss over time. If the issue is truly about blue pixel degradation, then this would affect blue pixels in BOTH PENTILE & RGB EQUALLY! As an example (and define it as you like) 1 in 4, 25% or 1/4 - it translates to the same effect to a screen (same percentage loss per screen) whether it is 100, 1000 or 10000 pixels that makes up that screen. A degradation rate of 25% (or whatever it might be) of any number is 25% of that screens brightness/ burn-in/ pixel count, whatever...

Unless the blue pixels in pentile are different to those in RGB then this simply can't be the real (or a factual) reason.
