ET, 23 Aug 2012It does have a limited pinout, but it has a high bandwidth,... moreYes I'll concede the point there but as Jon (Swe) says. Higher end I docks use the 30 pin connector to pass higher grade music. And the simplicity of slotting your device into a high end b&w or arcam etc dock and it then becomes your home music system is a far more elegant solution than having extra wires. But as has also been stated. Wireless will be the way things go more and more. Unfortunately, at the moment, music quality isn't the best when streamed via bluetooth. Last time I was in a Bose store I played with the Bose sound dock and Bose sound link using my missus' iPod. The music on the sound dock going through the dock sounded better to me than the music streamed over A2DP.

I agree life would be much simpler with a universal connector. Unfortunately, micro USB was the standard chosen. The reason my htc legend connector broke was because I was using a desktop dock stand and the USB port couldn't take being slotted on & off whilst taking the weight of the device. It soon broke.

Its true that micro-USB cant do analog audio out... but higher end i-docs actually use digital signal and external dacs.

Pretty much all phones today come with 3.5mm audio jacks, plus that is a standard that also works with mp3-players, and with adapters you can pretty much connect any device that has audio output on it. That would make it a far more versatile connector for cheaper docs. As that connector however rely on built in dacs in the device with the audio output, its better to get the digital feed from a device, when possible.
But using 3.5mm connectors would also save the makers the licensing fees, so all those i-docs would have been cheaper.

                Charging?
Well is that really pratical? You have limited battery life in a i-doc, most of the time, if not always, its limited to much fewer hours than the i-device can play music. Why then would you want that speker to waste its batteries charging the i-device?

For those that are connected to the wall for power only, well it you are at home, then you probably have a charger nearby, and its not really a problem. But I guess many of those speakers are of higher grade and use the digital out of the 30-pin dock.

USB does not on its own support a digital audio signal, but USB can be used for external audio interfaces... sure the port and the device has to support it, but had Apple gone for micro USB, all those docs would have had interfaces, and those i-devices would support OTG and external interfaces. After all Im pretty sure that some external gear, like professional audio acessories for i-devices actually works like that, with an external interface and not just tapping on to digital or analog signal support of the connector.

Get ready for more people asking me "Hey do you have an iPhone Charger?" When I have a MicroUSB cable and charger in my pocket.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to continue to say, "Nope, but I have an universal (outside of iPhone) charger".

Why can't they just use the freaking MicroUSB charger like everybody else? This Proprietary stuff is old.

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2012And to add to that.. Have you googled iPhone accessories... moreSure, but to use that dock connector, they have to pay licensing-fees to Apple.
And that is the sole reason for apple no to make the switch, cause they can't take licensings fees for something they dont own.

Micro USB ports, that goes slighly off standard can support HDMI out, USB-otg, Quick charging, headset, and so on.

Sure you can have a micro-USB port that also allows for quick charging, thus going outside the micro-usb specs.. .but so does MHL

USB ... moreIt does have a limited pinout, but it has a high bandwidth, so handling external displays, audio in/out, control links and data transfers are possible, even all at the same time. The problem with USB connectors is handling analog data, for this the lower pinout is a problem, but digitally, you can output a lot with USB's 2 data pins.

I'm just comparing the difference between dock connectors vs USB and giving an opinion as to why apple chose 30 pin over micro USB.

Also. I stand by my comment that micro USB connectors are not robust. I have a Samsung galaxy pro that has had two repairs to the connector now. Before that my htc legend had one that broke and I've had several charger connections ( I mean 3rd party external batteries etc) that have broken and looking inside the USB connector you can see broken pins.
