Recession signals are rising , plus PC/Mobile market has reached the plateau right before Covid ... nowadays only overpriced low quality not justifiable upgrade

S Yu, 11 Apr 2023Many, actually. Try the Adobe suite on Android, or C1, Affi... moreAnd let me guess, you can't imagine finding replacements for those pieces of software? Lumafusion for video editing, Microsoft word for document editing, snapseed for photo editing. All of which are fully featured. I understand that some people have apps they don't want to switch away from that only work on x86. But discounting an entire operating system based on that doesn't mean it's a bad operating system, it means you're really bad at tech. Mobile desktop modes have been very useful and very functional for years now. My 2019 LG G8X hook up to PC peripherals no problem and run whatever apps I want. So, it won't run windows apps. I can find replacements. Acting like every user couldn't possibly get away without their one x86 app is completely ridiculous. If you think that android desktop modes aren't useful, I'm sorry, but you're in denial.

PC repairability and upgradability is on another level, where a Mac doesn't even come close.

            Software:
I personally use Linux and OSX exclusively (software dev), but it is a wide known fact that you can backup and quickly restore from physical backup on Windows, and the process was flawless for ages. You can also do it from OneDrive, in which case you only need to be online. I've done this very thing for my wife and in-laws laptops recently, and it was a breeze.

            Hardware:
At worst, you have almost everything soldered to the motherboard, just like on any Apple laptop or all-in-one, in which case you just replace the motherboard. The big difference is that motherboards quickly drop in price 2 years after the device release, so instead of paying $600 for an apple motherboard even for a 10 year old laptop ($400 if you are lucky), you can get a new motherboard for $150 to $300 depending on configuration and how old the laptop is. 5-6 years later that motherboard can be had for under $100.

At best, like with gaming laptops, everything is upgradeable/replaceable, in which case individual broken parts are even cheaper. Like if a RAM module dies, you replace just your RAM, keeping the motherboard and CPU the same. Or if you want to upgrade a few years down the road, you can swap RAM and/or CPU keeping the motherboard the same.

In the hardware world, nothing is harder and more expensive to repair than a comparable Apple hardware. And more often than not, it fails sooner than its PC counterparts only because Apple picked design over function, so they end up running hotter. "cough" 2019 MacBook Pro with butterfly keyboard.

Windows you have to buy a new copy of Windows.. use third party migration software.. endless patches.. make sure the new drivers work.. downloads etc etc.. a hassle indeed.

As for repair, nothing repairs easier then Mac. Because there is only such few models, repairing is clearly documented, and they even have their dedicated repair shops. As for PC, so many makers and models.. each with their own pros and cons.. so its hard to determine repair rating.. plus if something broke.. it's hard to obtain the parts.

The only thing you may argue about PC.. cheap. that's all... but to repair and upgrade is nothing but pain and grief..

$1k+ laptops are great. Desktops are dead to mainstream people. It’s only invaluable to real professionals, though. And, last but not least, the future is all about very efficient mobile devices. Intel, AMD, and even NVIDIA better get a step on it before they start losing serious business.
