I had expected a few new features, but it seems as if Samsung has already introduced everything possible before the competition. The only new feature is the interpreter, but that looks more like something new just for the sake of offering something new.

What I like is the 5x zoom which I miss on Z Fold.
And I like that it is IPX8-rated, just wondering whether Google is using a Samsung patent for that.

I don’t see this device as a serious competitor to Z Fold, especially at that price, but I believe in the US a few people would prefer a US product over one from Korea.

AnonD-546724, 10 May 2023Y’all must understand, while bezels whiners are laughable, ... moreISP has way less impact than you think.

Look at pixel 3 vs 3a. Same imx363 + same software , just different ISP.
Difference was not even 5%. 99% would not even spot different between photos.

Qualcomm Spectra would not change the issues seen on photos taken by pixel. These issues exost because google wants. There is zero to do with hardware.
There are other brands that take photos with same issues.

You can give apsc sensor and 8g2 to pixel 8, photos would have same issues of pixel 7.

But love to see when phone uses ram/staorage made by same Samsung Semicon. Same factories that are also making the isocell sensors.

There are chips from 4xx/6xx/7xx that were made by Samsung. Nobody said anything.

By the way, 810 was made at TSMC.

Y’all must understand, while bezels whiners are laughable, chipset whiners are dead right.

Tensor G2 is based on Exynos 2100. Using an Exynos architecture is already a bad decision (probably the worst in Pixel history) but what about a 2.5 years old Exynos architecture?

Exynos 2100 was announced back in late 2020, to be used the following year in S21 series.
In 2021 it performed similarly to the SD888 but that Snapdragon was a pretty bad chip to begin with (it was also from the infamous Samsung foundries).

In 2022 Samsung confirmed SOC manufacturing isn’t something they can handle, with the infamous Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Qualcomm finally stepped in and tasked TSMC to handle S8+ Gen 1 manufacturing.

In late 2022, Samsung finally dropped the ball and supposedly gave up on Exynos, the 2300 not even being announced let alone launched, with S23 series finally escaping the Exynos curse around the globe.

Rumor has it, Exynos 2300 would’ve been a whole gen behind S8 Gen2 (So Pixel 8 and Tensor G3 will be two whole gens behind S8 Gen3 devices)

You have to understand, the difference with Snapdragon chipsets wasn’t just in Geekbench numbers.
We’re talking worse pictures quality across the board, worse battery life, worse thermal management…and devices were sold as if they were the same as their Snapdragon peers.
Exynos really is a cursed name in tech.

One can only wonder what a Pixel 7 Pro camera woud put out even with a vanilla S8+ Gen 1. Whatever customization Google is doing, I don’t believe it can be worth it when the base SOC is such dumpster fire.

But Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are hundreds cheaper than competition, so to some it might justify that poor chipset choice. Not to me, I’ll gladly pay a couple hundreds more for a current gen SOC.

But now, today on May 10 2023, Google announced a shiny new foldable for 1800 bucks, obviously a device aimed at enthusiasts who tend to want the most bleeding edge stuff.

I’m not sure how that crowd will react to having a 2.5 years old rebadged Exynos under the hood.

It seems Pixel 4 was the last gen with a proper flagship chipset, also the last to use the distinctive XL moniker.

But hey at least we can hope to finally get flagship pictures on a foldable, since no foldable seems to get flagship camera hardware but Google apparently doesn’t need that to achieve great results.
