Asus ROG Phone 8 arrives with SD 8 Gen 3, telephoto camera and IP68 rating

09 January 2024
The display still supports 165Hz refresh rate, but it is now an LTPO panel that can also do 1-120Hz variable refresh rate. Asus also added wireless charging.

Looks like it's gone pretty much all in on controller users (smaller footprint + presumably a bit lighter would help with that) but that does make it worse for the touch gaming market due to the lack of bezel (and let's be honest gaming in general, as you no longer have the front speakers or the non hole punch screen, but at least it still has the headphone jack that shouldn't have gone away in the first place).

As it stands it's not got a lot of gaming appeal but it looks more mainstream targeted anyway. And let's be honest, this is because it's probably the same phone as the Zenfone 11 Ultra, which if they can upgrade the PPI a little and tone the refresh down to 120hz would probably be a flagship contender if Asus could back their pretty good software with a support window closer to the big players (Apple, Samsung, Google, even OnePlus have longer support cycles than Asus usually does).

SuperSpruce, 09 Jan 2024This phone is overpriced. $1100 for the base variant mat... moreyeah overpriced and their hardware doesnt last long... it will fail within 5 years of usage, at least mine does.. rog 1 camera autofocus failed after 1 year, rog 3 main charging port failed after 3 years. luckily they have 2 charging ports. i will avoid buying another rog phone unless it is super dirt cheap!

Under screen selfy, 09 Jan 2024If they have decided to go for a punch hole selfy camera, ... morei know right! i would have get this if they make it all screen udc or with forehead camera display. now that annoying punch hole is ruining the screen, doesnt matter if it runs on 165hz refresh rate that punch hole is a deal breaker for me..even when watching movie cant help but to notice that ugly black circular mole.. so RM9 pro or z60 ultra for the win!

Really Asus, charging an iPhone price for this midrange looking "gaming" phone?

I have ROG Phone 3 and 6D as well my current RM8Pro I'm using now, and seeing this jeez.

                  Big Meh:
                  - Punched in the face, I mean punched hole selfie cam
                  - No more true front firing stereo speakers :(
                  - Smaller battery

Guess I'll stick with the cheaper and cooler RM9Pro.

There is no direct comparison if they have the 8 gen 3, Asus is targeting a broader audience than just "gamers".
The quality of audio, screen, construction, cameras and IP protection is totally different.
And for the price it will be around it is much more equipped and complete, It is more than justified.
There is no comparison between these devices.

So, SEA and India will have to put up with mediocre camera module? Nah, Asus get your head straight or else this segment ain't for you. :)

lol punch hole gonna have a hard pass now on this trash

                                  This phone is overpriced.

$1100 for the base variant matches the $1100 for the iPhone 15 Pro with 256GB, and same for the S23 Ultra on a slight sale (it's actually going for $875 now lol). Who's gonna buy this new phone? The price should've been $900, that would be competitive.

And it gets even worse with the RAM/storage markups. The middle tier is a 350% markup and the top trim is a whopping 600% markup! This gets you to high end PC prices!

IpsDisplay, 09 Jan 2024Don't forget our boys the fair phone with 8 yearsSo you still regret Samsung didn't provide 7 years update for your Samsung S8,that you dumped 4 years ago?
Biggest problem with old phones is not only software, it's battery charging cycles.
Also phones are prone to a lot of wear and tear being personal devices, most people want to change after 3 years, at least that is the average.
