New M4-powered iPad Pro (2024) blows its M2-based predecessor out of the water

09 May 2024
The new iPad Air (2024) models use that same M2 chip (the previous Air had the M1).

Sort by:

M2 (or even M1) are still plenty powerful and efficient, but this shows that apple is moving in the right direction. I will change my M2 when they will go under 2nm chips

SShock, 09 May 2024Apple is absolutely not afraid of Snapdragon X Elite. Nothi... moreThey ARE afraid, since the new chip seems to get very close to Apple Silicon performance, paired with a proper desktop OS. Microsoft is constantly working on improving Windows on ARM which at this point, has gotten pretty decent.

SShock, 09 May 2024Apple is absolutely not afraid of Snapdragon X Elite. Nothi... moreCPU wise totally agree but GPU wise, Apple got stagnant a LOT of time ago. Snapdragon GPU wise might create a very good combat to Apple.

Meanwhile my friend is still rocking her 2020's A12Z based iPad. She's an illustrator but has never been left wanting for more power.

No competion to SD X Elite, since the tablet powered by stupid(er) iOS (iPadOS). Apple should consider MacPad

So an SoC is much faster than another SoC 2 generations older, and water is wet.

I also don’t get why people dismiss such improvements and say nonsense like “it’s not gonna run Netflix or candy crush better” as if advancing technology is bad or something. This is great for everyone as competitors will also continue on making better chipsets. I mean yeah not everyone plays intensive games or exports videos with their phones but things like improved efficiency alone is a massive W for anyone no matter how they use their device. This is an expensive device for “”pros”” too so they’ll have a higher chance of doing such intensive tasks anyway.

This chipset allowed apple to put tandem oled on their ipads (which obviously consumes more power than a single layer of oled) and made it possible to have sustained 1000 bits of brightness so yes guys, it actually does make your Netflix experience better.

Expect such screens to be popularized among phones for even better experience once the technology (both tandem oled and power efficiency of such leds and chipsets alike) becomes mature. Again, a W for anyone no matter how they use their devices.

potato4k, 09 May 2024And... seriously, what will people do with that performance... moreApple is absolutely not afraid of Snapdragon X Elite. Nothing can really match M series ARM chipset + dedicated OS specifically tailored for it, it's what Apple is doing. Snapdragon X Elite will NEVER have that close OS integration. Microsoft is fumbling around with Windows for ARM for over 15 years and it's still hot garbage. Best bet for Snapdragon X Elite would actually be if popular Linux distro like Ubuntu goes with all out ARM support. If they compile the entire Snap and Debian repositories of apps for ARM and have OS that is designed for ARM, now that I can see as an excellent option and I'd totally be on board for Snapdragon X Elite powered laptop since I already run Ubuntu. After all, on Linux, you grab 99% of apps from the built in repositories. This would mean everything native for ARM with no emulation or translation layers for maximum performance and efficiency. Recompiling entire repository for ARM will take a lot of compute time tho, but it would totally make sense. Come on Canonical and Qualcomm, sit together and do something, stop waiting for Microsoft.

The most impressive thing with m4 imo is it consuming half the power of m2 in similar tasks. Such efficiency will definitely benefit macbooks using them unless apple also uses tandem oled (that consumes extra power) on them.

New is always better (improved) than old. Isn't that natural in tech world. What's different in this?

And... seriously, what will people do with that performance? It's not going to make you watch netflix any faster.

Also the funny thing is Apple removed the ultrawide camera. So the latest $1000 iPad Pro cannot even shoot spatial video for the Vision Pro? So much for that ecosystem huh. Seems like an oversight, ie Apple is rushing this iPad Pro out to rush M4 out because they're afraid of Snapdragon X elite. Maybe.

Well it be kind of weird that new chips be slower then old chips.
All past 20 years build cars blow every 1960 car out of the water too.
Isn't that kind of natural that when we advance in time then things get better ?

3+4 is not equal to 9, and 4+4 does not equal to 10

                            Extremely overpriced.

m4 may be better, but m2 has a better price to performance ratio.

I mean you'd hope so. They skipped the entire m3 chip line. It's like comparing an 8 gen 1 and a gen 3

do the processors use the same power consumption for those stats? if so could apple In theory half the performance of the m4 chip to get the same speed of the same iPad but with more battery life?
