Sony Xperia 1 VI teaser hints at new aspect ratio

13 May 2024

A phone with an audio jack. I will definitely be in my short list.

LOL, 14 May 2024That's because hardly anyone buys Sony phones anymore,... moreWell, if most of the people are not interested in Sony phones and are happy with their Samsung, Google, Apple and other Chinese brands, and it's only us few Xperia-lovers, then why is Sony considering their feedback? They won't buy Sont anyway and we will, so doesn't it make sense to listen to our feedback?

I remember watching the launch event of Zenfone 11 Ultra, and I think it was their CEO who said that this time around they "listened to your feedback" and I was like wtf! Literally every Zenfone user wanted that compact form factor to stay and these dumb people came up with an absolutely ugly piece of brick!

In both these cases, feedback of those who actually use these phones or who want to buy one, was ignored, and there was attempt to bring over people from Apple and Samsung land.

I agree with your point on updates, but that is actually something which is justified by their low consumer base,

Also, I did use Pixel 3a for four years and it was lovely, but I think Pixel 6 onwards, they started making them huge, the headphone jack was gone and to top it off, they brought their own stupid chip. A no-go for me now.

The difference is in customers wanting to buy the best flagship phone and those who want to buy an Xperia. The former would not buy a Sony because their needs are different and they have options. For me, I want a notchless display, a headphone jack, expandable memory and a compact size. Tell me what Apple or Samsung or Google will give me anything like this! For this reason, I'm out!

But typically the Xperia 10 VI, if priced the same as the V, is a better buy for the money.

NeonHD, 14 May 2024> and the occasional Pixel gives far better value for mo... moreI have a (eww) lemongrass Pixel 7 and (boring) black Xperia 1 V. Yeah, I know. They couldn't be more different, but I like them both. I like their cameras, but I like to use the Xperia more than usual as an exclusive camera device which brings the answer why I decided to bought it in the first place. P.S. I don't bother its 21:9 ratio but I've never use a split-screen or watch movies that much. Only to test it out when I first got it, but never on a daily basis.

            Anyhow...

Everyone agrees Pixel 8a is awkwardly positioned with its price right now, especially if you compare it to the 6 months older brother Pixel 8 which is clearly better. So, when we mention those 2 models, which one do you think represents a greater value for most people? Those two models or the new Xperia 10 VI?

I think the real value is in the flagship category where Sony doesn't have to bother with cutting corners so much, so in series 1 we can see some things that other phones in the same class don't have. I appreciate that, how about you?
            Cheers.

justasmile, 14 May 2024Y'all are talking about 21:9 on what is clearly an art... moreYou are absolutely right and 21:9 is now officially dead.

And the 4k feeling in photos. There are too many phones out there for all these people who say they don't like the 21:9. Why they want us to be sad? They are bad persons. Bring back the 21:9 4k phone

justasmile, 13 May 2024“Have you tried a 6.5" phone with a 21:9 aspect ratio?... moreAll he indicated is the fact that these stretched 21:9 phones are easily too narrow for most and then already clumsy long, way to long. That did not help Sony. But i guess this is 2024: say a simple FACT and get attacked.

Yeah, true. I have a xperia 1 and I can clearly see how this was much better than the iphone pro max display resolution wise. everything is much sharper and looks better.

Anonymous, 13 May 2024like the old premiums - z5 and xz premiums... i love those... moreiphone has one: iphone SE. They released the latest SE only in autumn, not long ago. However, it is only 4.7" and it won't accept an SD card, and also too expensive for me:)) I think each company should produce at least one 5.5" 16:9 phone. It shouldn't be too difficult for them to adopt 16:9 phones to the new ways in which people use them.

HAH. That's got to be a joke. Have you even looked into their new Pixel 8a? That crap should've never existed, at least not at that price.

LOL, 14 May 2024And there it is, the end of the 'CinemaWide' 21:9... moreWhether or not it's a bad decision depends on how you use it (i.e. it's subjective).

To most people, yes it's likely a bad decision, but to a few, 21:9 is desirable for applications such as cinematography, and like YUKI said below, provides more screen real estate when screen splitting.

So if you want to view it under the POV of an average consumer, sure it's bad.

If people want cheaper phones, the Chinese phone brands got them covered. They want the premium flagship ones, Samsung and the occasional Pixel gives far better value for money.

Forget about hardware specs, Sony should try dealing with its mediocre (compared to competition) camera quality and the terrible software update policy (2 years, no changelogs) before trying to compete.

And there it is, the end of the 'CinemaWide' 21:9 aspect ratio experiment for Xperia phones.

Took Sony many years to do a u-turn on a bad decision. Note: just because the rest of the industry doesn't do it, does not necessarily mean you made the right decision. It's typical Sony hubris.
