AnonD-226385, 06 Feb 2014The fact that in the quarter Sony sold 10 million smartphon... moreIf Nokia had switched over to Android from the go, Samsung wouldn't have had a chance. It had nothing to do with the latter's marketing budget, which Nokia had blamed to be the reason for their downfall. Samsung was already financially strong when Nokia was on the top. But, of course, they weren't going to own up to their mistakes. The fact that they went down was because they dilly dallied too long in dealing positively with the competition. Sticking to and trying to push Symbian while the consumer was clearly flocking towards Android was their one big mistake. Neither could they get Symbian to stand up to the competition. Samsung seized the opportunity and started to rise, while Nokia started to fall. You might be tempted to blame Elop, but Symbian's shine had long worn off by then, and it wasn't appealing for most anymore. By the time they started to react, it was a little too late for them. They'd suffered heavy losses already, and then in came Elop waving satchels of Microsoft money in their faces, a deal which, considering how desperate their situation had become, they needed to go with to stay afloat. However, Windows didn't garner much attention either, at least not initially, and they couldn't sustain themselves any longer. Microsoft had no option, then, but to jump in and buy out the one company that the future of their platform was reliant on. It was either doing that, or losing their one and only Windows Phone partner.

Nokia was the top phone manufacturer then. They were renowned for their build quality, call quality, and, not to mention, their camera quality as well. If only they'd reacted on time, and in the right manner, things could've been entirely different today.

The only problem with Sony is it's call function.

Sony has always been good with televisions, music players, cameras and etc...they're the best. but you're right. they don't invest much in sales and marketing. maybe they're just confident enough about the quality of their products.

With dropping support for mobiles as well as some issues with screens and signal loss I'm rather surprised they sold that many. Doing a quick search online shows that the issues/problems some devices are having isn't just to one set device either.

The fact that in the quarter Sony sold 10 million smartphones on Android, while Nokia sold only 8 million Windows Phone phones leads me to suspect that Nokia would have done much better to have switched from Symbian to Android. Imagine the sales Nokia could have had on Android, with their famed build quality and camera excellence. I know they'd be going up against Samsung and the other Android manufacturers, but I think they would have competed very well.
