Sony Xperia Z2 Compact may have just passed by the FCC

03 April, 2014
Sony seems to be working on another flagship mini. It uses Sony's 20.7MP sensor and G Lens.

Sony seems so dumb to me... Every x2 successor of a phone HAS to be bigger. Let me guess, z6 compact is a 5.6" inch behemoth and z2 is 21"?

Would have to agree, this new direction Sony is taking does not provide enough time for the product to be properly integrated and do go through the business cycle. It's a calculated risk that they are taken, I hope it does go well for them though as I will be purchasing the Z2 outright. Even though technology is ever evolving and changing it would be extremely hard and challenging for Sony to evolve a phone semi annually with top notch specs. Unless they plan to provide less bezel, better battery, better ppi, better processor, and better camera every 6 months then it would be hard without one if these key areas to call it a flagship.

nikos, 03 Apr 2014you know it for more than 2 years, buy the previous flagshi... moreu are right....releasing new products in 6 months might seem fast to some people but those are the people who will buy the previous flagships after they get discounted...its an advantage...and i simply dont understand how can anyone pay such a high price for stupid apple products and at the same time complain abt other companies increasing their prices....its just bullshit..!!

nikos, 03 Apr 2014you know it for more than 2 years, buy the previous flagshi... moreIf older models is what pushed market share gains? You'd be right. But they don't. Newer models do.

Take for example the Xperia Z. The Xperia Z today, wouldn't outsell the Nexus 5. Why? Cause even in the Z's cheaper price point, it's still more expensive than the Nexus 5 with admirably comparable specs. So once again, they're not pushing market gains with older products.

Sony needs one flagship a year to bet on. Build anticipation for the next iteration, then sell even more based off of previous recognition built. But with Sony's current business model. That can't & won't happen? Simply because they're never majorly gaining in one place. They spread themselves too thin. People who would've possibly brought the Z2, won't, because they're perhaps looking foward to the more size friendly Z2 compact. So basically they're just splitting profits amongst their flagships. Yet they're steadily spending for R&D, marketing etc on the constant newly released flagships. So they by the end of the fiscal year, they just break even.

Taking into account 6 months time span between Z1 and Z2, I would expect Z2 compact release by June - July with market availability by August.

You guys won't believe... I was looking for a successor to my 808 Pureview...
Camera quality, music quality, utilities, USB OTG, small pocketable size, durable, etc...

And can you guess which set caught my attention? Yes. The Z1 compact. Although, I might wait it out, before actually getting it or Z2 compact now....

Its an amazing idea to have small screens and big stuff inside... All the best to Sony, and I want to see what this Z2 compact will be.

Btw, I'd rather see Z2 Ultra or Z3 than Z2 Compact this year soon. And don't forget to bring your another brilliant improvements. Make.Believe

nikos, 03 Apr 2014Invensting in phones is the most idiot thing i've ever hear... moreReally? "Cause you need it"??? My friend, we don't NEED 1080p displays or 20mpg cameras, or 4k ability recording. We want them. The people commenting on this article are tech junkies, not your everyday average consumer. Your everyday consumer give two craps about build quality, chipsets, OS's etc. They just want a phone that can provide basic functionalities.

So YES! It is very much an investment, cause if it wasn't? People wouldn't make it a point to point out the upside of purchasing cheaper devices like the Nexus 5's or Moto X's with somewhat of the same hardware at a more reasonable price.

Will they ever bring the Z1 or Z2 Compact to the US?

Not everyone here wants a hardcover book sized smartphone.

These phones to me are a complete home run spec, functionality and real world use-wise, but they just don't bring them here and so where's that leave us?

                          Very frustrating.

AnonD-250216, 03 Apr 2014I agree with you that is a little to fast, but you may me t... more1 & 2 - are the same thing, cpu is part of a SoC. Plus from 800 to 801 which truly is just a slight overclock.
                            3 - it's a lil bit bigger
4 - camera is the same, it's just software, which the Z1 will get eventually with a software update
                            5 - display, agreed here it's a huge improvement, it's about time
6 - ram, ehhh not really such a big deal, same as the slightly bigger battery, which you forgot to mention
7 - audio, yes fully agree with you here as well
But still it's the same as what samsung did with the dozen s4 variants last year. The Z2 could easlly be called Z1+

You can't really say samsung and htc have less improvements then what Sony did. First of it's the SoC itself, a jump from snap600 to snap 801 that a big leap, not like what Sony did from 800 to 801. Okay, camera it's only samsung's improvement, htc's is a downgrade, bye bye OIS, then again it's htc what else can you expect from them.
Plus when will you people start to differentiate build quality from build materials.
Samsung's flagships are plastic yes, which is cheaper than alu, but their phones aren't build badly, so build quality ain't bad it's just materials aren't so called "premium".
If their phones had crickets inside then it would be bad build quality, but there are none, they are very well put together. Problem is everyone is on the "cheap plastic" bandwagon.

Anonymous, 03 Apr 2014Other large OEMs also release a flagship once every 6 month... moreYou're completely ignoring my point. Yes, ALL technology (especially smartphones) will eventually become obsolete. My point is, Sony is doing it waaay sooner than others. So the already short lifespan of expensive flagships becomes that much shorter when purchasing from Somy.

                              Samsung Galaxy S4-S5 (9m-1yr)
                              HTC One M7-M8 (9-1yr)
                              Sony Z1-Z2 (5-6m)

My entire point is, when investing in such expensive products, you want to empower the customer with a sense of longevity. You want ensure the customer in the moment of purchase that they will not only have one of the best devices on the market, but also, a product that you won't feel guilty for purchasing in the near future.

It's already hard enough to make a sure bet in today's vast market of competition. But adding to the buying uncertainty by releasing direct follow up flagships in the same year helps none. Leaving alot of people to wait on the sidelines & watch instead of getting into the game & playing.

Z1 compact didn't had a great impact on the market according to selling coz 4.3inch didn't was bit small in terms of gaming etc. So if Z2 compact doesnt come up with 4.6inch of screen then it will suffer through same issue. So all in all 4.6 inch of screen is a must.
