Full HD is all we need, at smartphone screen sizes. I would even do well with a 720p If the companies have extra processing & GPU power they can utilize it on camera and can add more sensors

Good eyes can't see details beyond 1/6000 of the viewing distance. So 513ppi makes sense within 30cm.
But if you -like me- is an old guy with impaired vision it is only 1/3000, and thus so close that it would not make sense for us. But for young people: sure it makes sense.

I'm not the biggest fan of pentile displays, but man does it look fantastic on the Note 3.
As Bogdan Petrovan over at Android Authority once stated,
"At Full HD or higher resolutions, the difference between PenTile and RGB only matters from a technical perspective, for things like display lifespan, power consumption, and production costs. When it comes to the actual user experience though, the difference becomes unnoticeable."

And with power efficiency improving on the upcoming Snapdragon 810/808 SoC's, I'm hoping the increased power draw from the A57/53's performance boost will be offset by the lower power consumption of the 20nm process. Add to that, a slightly larger battery, and the screen size/resolution/ppi may work out pretty well.
However, that's a sick run you get with your N3. I don't game as often as I'd like with mine, but I'm glad to hear that the battery holds up so well. I know that not connecting to a network plays a big role in battery life, but do you have power saving mode enabled as well?

My honest opinion is that Full HD is all we need, at these screen sizes... I would even do well with a 720p...
If the companies have extra processing & GPU power, it doesn't mean it should go in management of each additional pixel. The companies can instead:
1. improve framerates of the games on FullHD display itself,
2. Save battery life by under-utilising the faster processors and GPUs,
3. Have a concept of multitasking, like an option to listen to music while playing games...?!
Let me tell you that the smaller the pixels get, the more difficult it is to perceive details at 100% zoom of a photo. Because the display might show it, but our vision is limited.
There are many ways in which additional processing power can improve our mobile life.

But bigger is better. I went from 3.7 -> 4.3 -> 6.0 -> 6.4".
Can do so much more with a bigger screen, and as long as it fits in the pocket and hand I have no complaint.
Wasting cpu, gpu and battery life on pointless screen resolutions however does bother. As does pentile, which should be illegal.

I too can foresee tablets becoming less popular as these so called 'phablet' devices develop. They can do more than a tablet & (most) fit in to your pocket.
Larger more powerful screen devices with smaller footprint / bezels will become the norm. History already reflects this trend. Anyone who doubts this or denies the benefits of a larger screen phone that's still ergonomically practical has to be mentally defective. ;)

WQHD is overkill, unless it's a PenTile display..
FHD is perfect. Uses less power, and you'll not be able to see the difference.

But I have to mention that I don't have SIM in my Note. The size of the screen kills LCD displays, while the pixel count of the screen kills Amoled displays, so yes, a lot of battery juice will be required to power up these WQHD units for a daily use.
